Default Muffler Problem.

I had been noticing some silver/black hairy stuff coming out of my muffler. It was usually only a little and I thought nothing of it. I just got home today and saw a real big trail of it hanging out and figured something was definately wrong. Anyone have any idea what it might be from? Or what I can do to fix it? Or if I have to pay to fix it, about how much? Any information is appreciated, thanks.

OEM I'm pretty sure. I bought the car like a year ago from a used dealer. It came with some reciepts about the muffler and some other stuff being replaced I'm pretty sure, I have it around here somewhere. It looks like silvery-black hair all strung together. It was maybe a 5 foot line hanging out the back of my muffler lol

You need a new muffler I bet. That's the sound insulation, steel wool packed in to absorb the sound.

Yeah that's probably it. About how much does a new muffler cost parts + labor? And how soon do I need it replaced?

Depending on what you want. You can get an OEM muffler and it'll be pricey. You can get a good brand, stock looking muffler from someplace like http://www.magnaflow.com, look for deals on eBay, i just picked up a magnaflow for 59 shipped.

Or you can get a ricey/cheap one from the muffler shop like Midas or whatnot and suffer from the loud annoying noises.

Labor shouldnt be that much, less than 100 I know. You need it replaced as soon as
1) Your local law enforcement doesnt like the noise of your loud exhaust
2) it drives you nuts.

It's not going to hurt your car if you dont fix it right away.

lol It hasn't been any louder yet, the stuff really just started coming out in bulk tonight. >=P Now I have to bank away some cash to pay for this. If it's not one problem it's the next. The muffler was just replaced like 2years/10,000 miles ago along with some other parts in the exaust system.

you need a new muffler, as it seems as though the baffles have been rusten out.....either get an aftermarket cat back (Apexi World Sport and RSR ExMag look very classy, and are still very quiet....otherwise get an OEM replacemtn axle back

How good do axle back really perform? You still have all that tiny factory crap in front of axle...

I believe what FW was saying, and what I was saying with buying jsut a muffler, is i'm assuming this person is not really interested in performance and is just looking for a cheap fix that will bring it within OEM standards. An OEM axleback or a magnaflow will do exactly this with a good price tag attacthed.

If not, i'd get a catback as well.
