Cam Dilemma and Z6 pix!
I'm having a bit of a cam dilemma. I bought my D16Z6 today for my 4th gen. YES! Anyway, heres my situation. I'm looking for 130~140 whp. So far, I bought a CAI, headers, exhaust, bored t/b. I'm looking to get cams and get it tuned to see what numbers I put down. Since I'm a college student I cannot afford new valves/value retainers/valve springs. So I need a good stock replacement camshaft. Keep in mind im going to be using an OBD-0 z6 with the a6 dist/im/etc and the pm6.
I was wondering what cams should I get? I was looking at the D15B vtec cams, zex 59100 cams (not the 59300, that requires upgrading the valve train), or the crower basic upgrade. Maybe a regrind for n/a? Any help would be appreciated on helping me decide.
Yes... I searched.

First, that motor is SOHC. There is only 1 cam. Sorry, pet peeve.
That motor won't make 130 whp with I/H/E, and a different cam.
Get a regrind from Exospeed if you don't want to put in better springs/retainers.
Some run the 53900 ok on stock springs, just depends on your RPMs, and age/wear of the motor.
After having a valve float/drop on an aftermarket cam though, I now advocate new springs/retainers.
Hope the MPFI swap, and VTEC controller setup goes well.
You'll need a controller of some sort, or RPM activated switch.
Since you have the whole z6 it would be easiest just to do the OBD1 conversion.
Its only about 100ish for the harness, and then 50-100 for a P28.
Most of the VAFC's run about 2-300$ anyway.
Good luck

Call comp cams, they have more than one to chose from. ZEX is big on the sohc engines they have more than one cam. Call summit racing equipment
800-230-3030, Crane Cams, Doug Herbert cams there is lots of cams for the sohc engine BUT the cams for the dohc engines have greater lifts than the sohc engine that I have seen so far.

for max HP on a n/a z6 you are going to have to go obd1 w/ the p28. I have a z6 in obd0/pm7 and it doesnt run as fast as it should. Im going to go obd1 for a xmas present to myself!!!

For the poster...140whp on pump gas will be tough with a stock computer, sorry to tell you.
If i were you i'd take it slow...do what you can now. Take the head off and do a DIY porting job if you feel comfortable.
140whp will be especially tuff with a stock bottom end...i'd spring for some $100 nippon racing p29 pistons which will make you about 11.5:1 depending on head gasket.
At this point you need a vafc and should run obd1 p28 ecu.
140whp reliably you'll need this...
a good cam (crower stage 2 i'd say) - try to find one used
crower valvetrain - used or just save up...can always put this stuff w/cam in later
apexi vafc (at the least)
fuel pressure reg
some headwork
higher compression
Show me a dyno with someone on pump gas making 140whp with stock compression along with their mods...i know it's not impossible but the compression bump will bring your engine to another level of performance complimenting all mods listed above.
