Well, it's time to take the sunroof out of my project
I would like the car to be both legal for NASA & SCCA, so I decided to go with the steel route. The SCCA rules state that the plug must be of the same material & thickness of the original roof. I was going to use 16 gauge steel, but I think this might be thinner than the original body panels (I heard a rumor that body panels are 22 gauge)
What gauge steel have you guys used?

So what is it? Then or Than, gauge or ga? Other than that, I for the life of me can't see what you two are saying differently here. I agree with one of you I think

It is for HC, but for SCCA you need steel

Your best and probably least expensive method would be to find the same car in a junk yard and cut the roof off and then fasten this to the race car in the shape you want. If you try a flat sheet, it may not contour as well to the rest of the roof.
I believe if the car has a metal sunroof, you can leave it in as long as you 'adequately retain' it in the roof.

I used metal from a dented hood I had. It's the original red hood from my car, so it's the same colour too. I then used red vinyl to cover the "seam" and rivets. Cheap, safe and it looks pretty good.
Obviously, I took out the support frame from the hood, using just the sheet metal.
