my friend has a 95' JDM ls motor in his 91' intera RS. a few days ago, he noticed that the car putts a lot out of the exhaust. i did a compression test on his motor and all 4 cylinders came up 225. i called up a few shops, one of them told me that it could be a timing issue?? i don't get it though, because it was working fine a few days ago, so how could it all of a sudden be a timing issue? or could the fuel filter be clogged? can someone give me some suggestions on what it could be? also, there is white smoke comming out of the exhaust when i rev up the engine. and when i rev up the engine, the RPM'S take longer to go up then usual.

what is "egr"?? yeah, the weird thing is he's not losing any oil at all. he did lose a little, but it was probably because he had too much oil and it just burned off. but if it is a coolant problem, how can we fix it? i know his radiator is leaking a little bit. could that be the problem there is white smoke? and also, there is CEL either...
I allways hear of oil=blueish smoke. I have never seen that, its all ways been a gray ish to me, but you can smell it if its oil or coolant.
Does 225 seem high for the compression??? I thought it was supposed to be close to 200(197?), sorry dont have my factory book with me.
What mods does he have done?? Cam gears?? if so make sure one of them did not slip.

yeah, i did thought 225 was a little bit high for a stock jdm ls motor. and no, he has nothing done to the motor, other then intake. and we checked the camgears, it didn't skip timing or anything

i don't know why it would be running rich though...because it was running fine for a few days. and if it is carbon build-up, is there a way to fix that?
Dont know on the rich either, just another suggestion. For the carbon i have heard of this stuff called sea foam. Check out a ouple of the other threads up right now about smog. I have heard of putting ATF fluid in the motor, it is supposed to wash away the carbon, and it will burn off. Not sure if this works, or if it is good for your motor. Maybe some of the other guys have heard of the ATF trick also. But check around before you try it.

ok, i just got back from my friends house, and when i smelt the white smoke, it smelt like gasoline...not oil, not sweetness...GAS...
could it be running too lean, but how? it's totally stock and it was fine a few days ago. and also, i just replaced the fuel filter today

is there a way that i can tune the fuel myself? or would i have to bring it to a shop? but does that make sense though? the car is putting/hesitating because there is too much fuel?
