Question for D-series turbo guys
I currently have a 98 civic LX with the stock Y7. I have been thinking about something big but am unsure about whether to swap or boost. I just wanted to know what you guys thought on your turbo D's and whether you would turbo your D or swap if you had to do it again.
I was looking at the kit from slowboy racing which comes with pretty much everything. I think it comes with a tubular manifold also. It seems pricey when you look at it as a whole though
I love a turbo. It's alot of fun mainly because of the noises and pull. I plan on swapping for a B16 later and adding the kit to that w/ new piping and maybe upping to an 18g cuz I have a 15g kit now. Anyway Turbo first theres alot to do on a Dseries.
Im kind of liking this idea... If i get the turbo kit for my D, and i decide to swap later, i still have almost everything I need to turbo the swap, ie intercooler, turbo, blow off, missing link, safc, etc...hmm... I like the idea of being the only kid in my high school with a turbo D.
SOHCturboVtec, one of my main concerns is reliability. Have you had any problems with your drivetrain or anything else?

Ditto. Without hmt I would of probably never turbo'd. It's great to do it, especially on D-series, because if you screw anything up, turbo or engine, they're cheap.

dont do it with a homemade kit so much as a "custom" kit . while junkyard setups are cool . if you really want some power , do your homework and built your motor and turbo setup right . you will have afucking killer.
this guy i know has a turbo crx and im pretty sure he could help me. i think the one big thing is that there are so many little decisions when picking a turbo kit/custom kit that its kind of overwhelming. and the fact that this is my first car and big project. i am starting to really like the turbo idea though
just search . i can tell you right now stay away from any products from ssautochrome.....
about the only kit id say to buy would be a full race kit , thats your favorite custom setup in a kit
. peakboost makes a nice one too .

Turbo your D, smoke a NA B swap anyday. Get Uberdata and tune it right and it will be as reliable as you want. D's make more torque boosted than B's ever will too, something to think about.
a few months ago i had been reading up on this on turboD16.com. i havent really searched about it but i have been seeing uberdata quite a bit. im gonna go check up on that
thanks a lot guys!

See, that's why I think junkyard set ups are good for most noobs, what if he screws something up on his multi-thousand dollar kit. I mean hell, you can make a decent "put together" kit for the price of a full race manifold by itself. I know I've made a few mistakes through my turbo past where it could of definitely damaged the turbo, and if I had a big money kit I would of jumped right out of turbo right then, intimidated by it. But with cheap ****, you're not scared to mess around with it. It's kinda like, start off working on cars with a hyundai, or start with a lexus. Chances are you might make a few mistakes and learn along the way, don't make it hurt.

Turbo the D!! Turbo D>>b16 swap
Reasons why turbo d > b16
- more hp
- more torque
- cheaper (depending on how nice of a kit you build)
- you learn a hell of a lot more putting together a kit
- the sense of accomplishment that comes from building your own turbo civic
- the fun sounds (had to say it!)
There are more reasons but you get the idea

I am looking into piecing my own kit together. I found a great intercooler (18x2.5x6) that will fit great. Now its just going to be figuring out which parts to get... Why should i stay away from ssautochrome?? I was actually looking at one of their manifold/turbo/WG sets for around 600. Any spcific reasons why to stay away form them?

Where to start?...
Do a search on "ssautochrome", the manifolds crack and the turbos crap out.

I'll read up on it when i get home. Im supposed to be working on my senior paper. I read on the site that its has 2 year warranty though? I may look into South Florida Performance also... I think im going to get a tubular manifold, T3 (or something similar) and a TiAL wastegate....
