I use regular dino (Castrol GTX or Chevron Supreme) 10w-40 changed every 3-5K miles along with an oversized Purolator oil filter 24458 and neodymium magnets. Keep in mind that I'm in So Cali.

5w-30 of whatever brand you like, 4 quarts. The magnets are a good idea, I thought of that and need to get my hands on some.

Well, i noticed that Honda used to use larger filters but went to smaller ones. A larger filter will tend to have more filtering area and/or pleats and hold more oil. It will also take longer to "clog". If the pressure difference becomes too great the filter will go into bypass which means it will effectively stop filtering the oil just to maintain the flow rate. This may seem far fetched but keep in mind that the larger filter costs the same as the smaller filter. There is also more of a cooling effect but not enough to make a significant difference and you could run extended oil change intervals without worrying about the filter too much. Basically there are no negatives but plenty of positives.

high rev honda engines have a far greater flow then any spin on filter can handle so they have bypasses built into them. make sure you keep this in mind when you decide you oil change cycle. 3k is cool ... 5k isnt

or get a CM relocated filter and change the filter ever 10k and the oil every 3

As far as I know, every filter has a bypass, not just hondas. The filter is overwhelmed and the bypass opens at around 2-4k rpm, it's not that high of an rpm. How about the bulletin on S2000 filters blowing off at high rpm from the pressure?

I would stick to 3k mile intervals though, if you have any fun while you drive that is.

i use 5w-30 mobil 1 you can get them in 5 qt containers from walmart for 20 bucks, i usually pair that up with the shitty fram filter that has the rubber grip, i have big arms and its really hard for me to get the filter off unless i use the stupid kind with the rubber grip on it.

I always use castrol gtx 10-30. I change it every 1,500 miles, and the filter every 3-4k.
Thats just me though.

You guys are changing your oils too soon, especially M1 users. I've been studying people's new and used oil analyses (various weights, locations, engines, mileage) for the passed year and found that even $1.39/qt Chevron Supreme/Halvoline dino oil is good for 4-5K mile oil change intervals. GTX is slightly better with M1 typically lasting about 6-7K.

Can you back that statement up with a reason?

I've found the same thing from what I've witnessed in the new cars. The 04 and up Acura TLs have an oil life indicator that tells you the percentage of oil life remaining. Most of the people that come in for an oil change at 3-4K miles have 30%-40% oil life remaining. Now this is on a brand new engine, so things are a little cleaner, but it still gives an indication as to the life of regular oil. Just to clarify, I asked a Honda field engineer about how the indicator determines the remaining life, and he said that it actually analyzes the oil in the car, it's not just guessing based on driving habits. If anyone can confirm this, I would be interested.

accualy the oil never breaks down.... if you wanna get technical.... but all the matal crap that gets into it is whats doing the damage.... now if oil filters accualy worked past arround town driving we wouldnt have to change the oil so often.

:edit: i know im gunna get flamed for saying oil "never" brakes down... but you get my point.

The best oil available at your local auto part stores is probably 0w-30 German Castrol. It says made in Germany on back. This oil is completley different than all the other syntecs, and it is actually thicker than most 30wt oils out there... Thats what I run in my 89 Civic DX, Great oil. (The hatch gets Amsoil) If you want to do some research on your own go to

Might wanna do some searches on these forums.

i seriously doubt oil has anything to do with your lma's being noisy,

mine are noisy and its not because of the oil i use!
