98 Civic Died As If Running Out of Gas - Will Not Start At All
A few days ago I was driving up a hill and my 98 Honda Civic started cutting back like it was running out of gas. It cut off, and wouldn't restart. We've replaced the distributor cap, the rotor button, and spark plugs. The car is getting both fuel (flooded the engine several times) and fire (blue spark at each plug), the main relay isn't faulty (can hear clicking under dash), and I can't get any codes from the ODB2 test. It passes without any error codes. The car will not start, though. Alternator, starter, and battery are fine. I'm wondering if it could be the ignitor. Before purchasing a $170 part, does anyone have any suggestions on how to test that? Or what else may be causing this? My brother noticed a burn spot on the coil pack, as well. Don't know what would have caused this, however.

Find a local with a Dizzy that's willing to help, it's very simple to swap them especially temp. Just make sure you mark their locations before you move them so as to not effect the timing.

bingo! if your coil is not done, it surely is on the way out. that is the tell tale sign of a burnt coil. ignitors are tougher to tell. if you need them both, just get a new distributor from distributorking.com

it's just the design. i have seen them go at as early as 66k and some are still plugging away at 200k+. maybe you had a monday coil....

That happened to my car a few months back when i was driving on the highway. It turned out to be the ICM(ignition control module).
From the way you described the problem, I was thinking ignition coil as well because I've had more than one experience identical to yours with ignition coils shitting the bed. It seemed odd that you were getting spark though . . . guess it just wasn't a strong enough spark.
