Default Those of you who have built an LS/VTEC..I need some facts

I have put together 3 LS/Vtec's in the past and I always used the vtec water and oil pump. I am faced with another one but the money isn't there to go with the oil pump. Has anyone ever had or built an LS/vtec with the stock LS oil pump? I have thought about using a .050 shim to boost the oil pressure in the regulator but I question the issue of cavitation at high rpm. Basically, if anyone has used the stock oil pump..is your motor still running, did you have issues that you feel were directly related to the oil pump, or plain oil starvation? Also, has anyone ever kept stock LS rod bolts? This is all against my way of doing things but if thats what someone wants...thats just what they want. Sometimes you can't tell people anythying and they just would rather risk it and save a few dollars. I just need to know if anyone has basically slapped a vtec head on a stock ls bottom and had it last revvin to 8200.

i bought my car with lsvtec stock untouched it sucked yes i reved it to 8200 several times knowing i would tear it down and rebuild it tore it down sold the head cuz wear on cam journals possibly from lack of oil pressure but no i wouldnt recomend any of that rod bolts are like 39 bux oil pump is under 100 thats not a lotta loot for the insurance im sure u could get a used vtec pump for under 50 y not build it right

If I were you I would rather play it safe and use a oil pump from a VTEC motor

I know on my LS/VTEC build I am going to be using a VTEC oil pump.

i used a bone stock b18a1 bottom end with over 100000 miles on it. i never replaced the water or oil pump. i never changed rod bolts and i used a bone stock b16 head. i also used the oil line conversion kit. i reved it to 8200-8500 everyday no joke i was not concerned with spinning a bearing or damage becuase i had a b20 short block waiting. i really beat the crap out of it and never saw a power loss. i drove it for 32000 miles which took almost two years to achive. never once did i have a problem. i used the same head on my crvtec build and everything was still in spec. i am however going back to my ls vtec setup in a view months. kust becuase i am going to build it the way i always wanted.
new setup is :
full type r head
3 angle valve job minor p&p and milled .02-.03
same b18a1 block bored and honed to ctr oversized piston spec i think .025 over
obd2 oil pump becuase they are all the same in obd2
vtec water pump
all new bearings rod and mains
arp rod bolts and head studs
stock head gasket
hondata intake manifold gasket
skunk2 im
jdm 4-1 header
chipped pr3 ecu

i am hoping for atleast 180 -185 whp
the only reason i am rebuilding becuase of high miles not failure. i will defend these setups all day people think they are ticking time bombs, but i say it is the builder and driver. i have personally only seen real oem honda engines blow. 1 gsr 2 d16, and 1 b16, and 1jdm k20r and one usdm k20 type s. all of which were relatively stock. none of them were mishifts either. just stupid drivers and bad techs. anytime you use these engines as race engines when they are still in stock form have achance of failure. just my .02

ps i would say just get the oil pump and water pump just becuase they are cheap but i didn't and never had a problem. oh yeah my b20 is on stock b20 water pump to and no problems so far almost 10000 miles
