Oil and filter change intervals on a 2004 Accord
The owners manual states that the oil is to be changed every 10,000 miles and the filter every 20,000. Am I missing something here, or is this a misprint. My daughters 2004 has 8,500 miles on it and the maintenance light is coming on. I am an old school mechanic and believe in 3,000 mile oil and filter changes as cheap insurance. With this in mind even though the car uses the lightweight oil 5w-20w, wouldn't it be better to change the oil and filter frequently every 3k to 4k.
Yes, the owner's manual for my '94 states to change it every 7,500 miles. Doing it at those intervals I'd be doing an engine flush everytime. I'm with you on doing it every 3K.
As am I with you on changing the oil every 3k-3.5k, better safe than sorry...plus i like to spoil my car using mobil1 super synthetic, my car loves it
My owner's manual for my '99 has an oil change every 7,500 miles, and a new filter every 15,000 miles.
I dunno, it just doesn't sound right. I give my car an oil change every 3,500 to 4,000 miles by myself (Castrol GTX, Fram filter).

i change my oil with castrol gtx 5w-30 every 2500-2800 miles.
utilizing toyo roki honda OEM filters made in japan too (S2K)!
please stay away from oil additives and engine flushes.....more like gasket eaters....
honda states specifically NOT to use oil additives.

i get my filters at employee pricing thanks to friends in the parts dept.
they run me about 4.50 a piece but are well worth it.
stay away from fram. if you cut one open you will see how garbage they really are.
at least get purolator PUR one if you are going to buy aftermarket.

We have an 02 Accord V6. Running Pennzoil 5W-20, adding a little Lube Control to reduce oxidation and a little Schaeffer's 132. Honda OEM filters, now using the PCX-004. Did a used oil analysis this summer, about 45K miles on the car, 4700 miles on the oil. Wear metals were very low and viscosity was well in grade. We do 70% highway driving. Running this current change out to 6000 miles +/-.
Running a good oil and maintaining the car well, OCI of 4-6 K miles should make sense, combo of highway/city driving. If you're running a lot of city miles, car doesn't get warmed up much, then you might consider changing sooner.
A number of UOAs show that Hondas do just fine on 5W-20 oil. Lost more info at http://www.bobistheoilguy.com

Not to shake peoples faith in the church of jiffy lube, I used Mobile1 for the last 150,000 miles and I change the oil about 25k - 30k. My '99 Accord has only 190,000 on it so it is still to early to tell if I am killing it.
my dealer gave me free oil changes until 100,000k miles on my 04 accord, but they only let me get it at the dealer every 5k miles. so i was assuming that changing it at every 5k was ok.

fyi, the canadien made honda filters are made by fram. though i never had a problem with them and i used them for years. my oem subaru filter is made by toyo roki now
as for the 7,500 -10,000 mile oil changes it says in the honda manual it will also under "sever conditions" to change it under a much lower interval. if you read what they call "sever conditions" it's what most car buyers do with there cars everyday. imo, oil changes need to be done atleast every 6 months regardless of mileage. every 3k miles to an oil change is definetly overkill these days even with dino oil. i would go 3,500-4,000 on dino oil and 4,000-5,000 on synthetic and change your oil filter every time.

So you get the filter from the Honda dealer? Last time I went there they replaced all Honda filters with a small oil filter that wouldn't even fit in a lawnmower.
EDIT: I did some research and it seems that the code for the Toyo Roki S2000 oil filter is 15400-PCX-004. Now, where do I get them for a good deal? Ebay and google doesn't really help.

I do mine, on a 2002, around every 10,000 km.
The oil we can purchase now is much better quality than what our dads used to use back in the day. So it is assumable that the oil will last alot longer. I do not find a problem with this at all.

i feel bad for your car's engine
I'm in line with KGAccord. Every 4-5k with filter - all my vehicles.
10 -12k miles ? The oil must look like ink ? And be about as thin !

Just because you use Mobil1 doesn't mean you should wait for your car to die before changing the oil. I'd say change it every 5K at most, no more.
15400-PCX-004 is that part number for s2k filter? im been changing my oil every since i had the car .. and always used fram.. i heard the s2k filter is better built from a friend. so i guess ill give it a try.
yes, that is the s2k oil filter part number.
yes it is better designed for that vehicle than any aftermarket oil filter.
