Default need to know what to look for in an engine...

literally...im pretty sure my rings are shot in my b18a. a ring job would cost me well over a grand and i found a complete b18a motor for 250. when i go check it out what should i look for ? im gonna take the head off and inspect the pistons, rings, head and cylinder walls. is there anything else specifically i should check? and are there any minor, minor things that are hard to find while looking at a cylinder wall i should keep my eye out for? thanks in advance...

check everything! and i mean everything. there is nothing worse than looking at an engine thinking its good and then putting it in and somethin go wrong. inspect inside and out

You may want to measure the bore diameter at different points to see if they are out of round. Also measure the flatness of the head and block, as they could be warped from overheating. If you really wanted to be thorough, you could also measure the oil pressure to see if the bearings are good. Checking the camshaft journals would be a good indicator of the oiling system. If they are scored, the motor is toast. Any flat spots on the rocker arm faces would also indicate an oiling problem. Excess oil residue in the exhaust ports may mean bad seals.

When you take out the pistons, look to see if the piston has varnish and stuff past the rings. That would indicate blowby. Finally, make sure the engine is legit.
