Please Help O2 sensor/ pipe question
Hello everyone. I have looked around here for a bit but just recently joined. I have done alot of searching and im not sure if i understand what my problem is. Maybe someone here can help me out. Heres my story:
On the highway, downshifted to pass semi, heard what sounded like a hole in exhaust. took my car to midas they say that the O2 sensor bew out of the hole in the pipe it is in. they said that the threading is screwed up and so i'll now need a new pipe and O2 sensor. they said the O2 sensor would cost anywhere from $300-400 and the pipe is a guaranteed $290... and that i need both. well, looking briefly online i have learned that there is such thing as a "universal" O2 sensor and i also found O2 sensors for much cheaper than what midas quoted me. What should i do? someone please help me put my information together and help save a poor guy some money! I thank you in advance for any helpful replies

First off I hate Midas! They will rip you off big time. Secondly I personally would not go with a universal 02 sensor but others say they are ok. You also need to tell us more info like what kind of car 4th/ 5th gen? I don't even think the OEM dealer sensors were over $250 but I could be wrong. Good Luck
sorry!!! like i said its kinda my first post... i have a 93 Si and the O2 sensor I'm talking about is the one right before the cat. (not sure if theres more than one) I really am confused as to why some of them i find on the internet are $211 or something and some are like $79, is that just a difference between "universal" and OEM?
i have heard that about midas before, i think im just going to get the car back myself and wait till christmas break to get it all figured out.... i do have access to someone who works at a Toyota dealership (not honda!) so MAYBE, they say MAYBE he can find me a cheap O2 sensor for my honda at cost to him. also my girlfriends dad owns a welding shop so he said he may be able to fix the threading in the pipe to fit the O2 sensor.... i dont know... my main question was about prices.... i may just have some garage put in an O2 sensor I find myself for $100 and how much would that piece of pipe cost? just lookin to save a buck or 300! thanks for any more replies.

Nobody? Nobody besides Prylwd? I know SOMEONE has had some problems or has some knowledge of the exhaust system and/or the O2 sensor! Even if you cant tell me much anything would help (where to get an O2 sensor, where i could get more info, etc.) thanks again HT
Centersville OH, isn't that near oxford??
Anyways, I wouldn't get a universal O2, but you can find a used OEM O2 from a junk yard, or a lot of different places im sure online too. Either way, if your O2 sensor is still functioning, and it's just a matter of threads, maybe you could weld on that O2 into the hole?

i have an o2 sensor i could sell you $25 to your door.....the pipe it is welded into is the exhaust manifold....which sometimes is also known as the header.....you dont want to replace the whole thing...get the welder to fix it.....just fix the threads by welding on a new "bung" or nut for the o2 sensor...and then screw mine in...pm me if you want the sensor....
ok man don't let them scam you... go find a muffler shop and tell them you want a new piece of pipe welded in with an o2 bung. they should do it up for cheap liek 50-100 bucks. then go get an oem o2 sensor from hondaautomotiveparts.com or wherever and screw it in yourself. easy.

Thanks everyone for all of your replies! i have a question for mgags7. sorry i didnt PM you, im new here and havnt really figured it out... the only catch is that im getting the pipe taken off soon and its going to the welder soon who needs an O2 sensor to make sure they can fit new threading in! so if someone else has a reply or an offer or just wants to tell me how to PM people, that would be great, thanks again everyone!
Okay, i've found various sensors online my next question for you guys is how do i know which one i should get? i found this one http://www.pitstopautoparts.co....html
for $88, shipped free, but when i search their "OEM" catalog, i come up with
http://www2.pitstopautoparts.c...ensor
this... why are they from 88 to 200 somethin dollars?
grrrr... being uneducated about this kinda stuff is so very frustrating! thanks so much for anyone who helps me out!
p.s. I'd kinda like a genuine OEM honda O2 sensor since everyone here has advised me against a "universal" one... but i have a feeling those are the $215 ones
