Please help, tranny woes
I have a 95 GSR with a stock clutch and pressure plate. I bought the car about a year ago pretty much stock and it shifted perfect. No problems at all. Pretty much the standard feel of a Honda tranny, shifted like butter. Since then ive added a few things engine wise and suspension wise. NEVER touched the tranny at all.
About a month ago it started to get harder to get into gear. Shifting was not at all smooth, but more of a notchy feel. I was also noticing a grind on the 1-2 shift while driving hard. At times it would refuse to even go into 2nd gear. To remedy this i changed the tranny fluid. Heard a lot of good things about GM synchromesh FM, so i went ahead and filled up with that.
The feel improved a tiny bit. But the apparent problem was progressing.
As of late the tranny will grind in gears 2, 3, and 4. Its almost impossible to downshift, which also requires much force on the shifter. If i drive hard from a start, the car WILL NOT go into 2nd unless i let the RPM drop to 3-4k. At a complete stop, with the clutch FULLY disengaged and the pedal all the way to the floor, i can feel the clutch engage ever so slighty. I feel the car periodically shake at a stop. It also does the same in all the rest of the gears. Sometimes the only way to get into first gear is to shift to second first. I also have to double clutch at times to upshift.
Ive changed my clutch master and clutch slave cylinders a few days ago, and that didnt help. What do you guys think??

my friend had the same problem with his ls and they said it was the tranny not the clutch. I would help out but he hasn't done anything to fix so I wouldnt know what to tell you other than it is the tranny
You've changed the clutch master cylinder.
How about changing the clutch itself? maybe its worn out.
Have the car stationary, and put the gear into 4th and then floor it, if it just revs up, its time to change the clutch

had the same problem....ended up being the syncros....blew the tranny a month later...might want to check that too
When your cruising in 2nd does it pop out of gear?

It could be the clutch, when I took mine out, I found one of the springs to be broken out. The spring was hitting the flywheel bolts, making it very hard to engage into 2nd, and made it shift notchy.

first of all, what engine mods have you done? have you significantly gained power over the stock output without changing the clutch? just a few bolt-ons should be fine, but if you've gained a lot of power, that could be the start of the problem. second, you should have used a transmission fluid that honda recommends, especially on a stock tranny. that could also be a factor in the demise of your transmission. honda recommends what they use because clearances in the tranny and the tranny itself are designed to use that fluid.
if it's grinding going into gear, your clutch might not be disengaged all the way. when you push the clutch pedal all the way to the floor and try to shift, does it still grind? maybe the synchros are out on those gears if you're having trouble getting into them. its kind of odd to see three synchros out in a tranny, but its possible. i would think if the synchros were shot tho, it would pop out of gear, and you said it doesn't pop out. if your clutch doesn't fully disengage when you hold the pedal down, you might have developed an air pocket in the hydraulic fluid. i know you said you changed the clutch master and slave cylinder. did you have any reason to change those parts, or did you just change them blindly to see if the problem would go away? you might just have needed to bleed the fluid.

The master cylinder was changed because i noticed that fluid was leaking from the push rod at the clutch pedal. I decided to change both since that is the recommended thing to do, and at 100k i thought it would be best to do so. As far as engine mods... comptech i/h, itr exhaust, ctr cams.. nothing too major. Never really abused the clutch at all, but again, with 100k on it anything can happen.
Im almost positive it is in fact the clutch. Sometimes, shifting into gear is pretty smooth. Engagement suffers, and thats the only thing that suffers. Its VERY inconsistent though and at times decide whether or not it wants to go into gear. I have bleed the system numerous times. Each time pedal feel has improved, but going into the gears, it feels as if the clutch is not fully disengaging.. thanks for the informative post by the way.
Also, what do you guys think of the exedy organic clutches??
