Default Blown D16 tranny...that magically fixed itself??? What happened?

Ok, i was driving home about an hour ago and there is this yellow flashing light and the guy stopped. I got pissed and blew the horn and he went and i decided to revg it and burn out because stock civics are so powerful. next thing i know, my car jerks and stops after spinning the wheels, hopping, and god only knows what else happened. a guy helped me push my car off the road and into sheetz.

after a little fiddling i found out that the tranny was stuck is first gear, but the shifter was in neutral...it would go into another gear sometimes when i was sitting there. as soon as i would let off the clutch with the shifter in neutral it would start to go and stall.

My friend and his brother came to help me and tried to figure out what happened. They decided since i still had a forward gear(whatever gear that was) i should try to make it home. (about 2 miles) so off i went towards my house with what i thought was second gear.

it ran fine but i didnt try to shift it to see if it still worked. when i was getting ready to turn left to go home, my tranny grinded and popped into second gear.

i tried to shift into third, perfect. fourth, perfect. fifth, perfect. a car in front of me slowed down so i got to try into first, perfect. i got into the driveway and everything was normal except my clutch feeling like a marshmallow... can someone give me an idea of what the hell happened? i was thinking maybe it got stuck in first gear and then it magically fixed itself...

CLIFFNOTES: i was stupid and tried to burn out more than a little chirp; car stopped; tranny wouldnt shift; couldnt get it into another gear; friends came, pushed me backwards so i could try to go forward and get home; tranny popped the way it does when you miss a shift; and works normally now

thank you for listening to this, i tried to write down everything that happened. oh, and i told some guy at sheetz where the liquor store was. i know that it was most certainly my fault, but i just want to know if you have ever heard of anything like this before. thanks, andrew.

first thing.. check out the clutch fluid to see if it is low.. mayb the clutch master cylinder (on the firewall is messed up) or the slave (on the tranny) is messed up.. if not.. then either its ur clutch / clutch parts (throwout bearing or pilot bearing) or even low on tranny fluid.. check all of those out.. check all the fluids first then last resort the clutch n tranny

Shift fork likely hung up on one of your blocker rings... You driving it broke it loose.

if it got hung up, that would make sense why it seemed like it was in first gear. i dont know much about trannys but how could it have fixed itself? did it just sort of pop back into place?

Well, i have been driving it for a day or so now and everything seems to be working ok. My clutch seems tired and thats the extent of the tranny incident... I would pull my tranny off but i am thinking about just ordering a new clutch and hoping that will make everything kosher...

Good places to get clutches? My friend works at Advance and could get me a discount on their stock "lifetime" warranty clutch... he said i could beat its brains out and if it blows before a year i get a new one...lol

I wouldn't go to Advanced to get a new clutch. You can pick up an OEM replacement from Clutchmasters for about $150, or go heavier duty and get an aftermarket from lots of places. Check the classifieds on here too. My 2 cents.

thanks ******. I talked to the shop I usually go to and he said definately dont buy an advance clutch. im thinking about Exedy or ACT. But there is this thought in my mind to just swap it for an LS. Also, they said a fork on the pressure plate may have broken off/loose. I wish i could take my tranny off to check...
Thanks for your help everyone.. Its nice to get help and not BS from people.

sounds like your clutch over-heated.
