Well maybe water was in more than just the spark plug holes. Check to make sure you didn't get your distributor all wet. In case you didn't cover it up before you started cleaning. May just need new plugs and wires though. But could be other things. Just check everything for corrosion. You can usually see where the water went and what it affected just by looking.

i have had the happen when i wash the engine bay. if you have an air compressor just blow it out, if not you need to figure out something to dry it out and i recommend leaving the wires off to make sure it is completely dry so you don't get rust.

First, take off the wires and make sure you actually have water in the spark plug holes. More than likely you do cause its happened to me a few times after washing my engine.

I don't have an air compressor either which makes it a little tough to get the water out. This may sound a little dumb but unscrew the top off of a spray bottle like from Windex or something like that and stick the tube in the spark plug hole and squirt away. Its gets damn near all the water out. Then maybe let it sit for about an hour with the spark plugs off and the hood open. That should get it pretty much dry.
