Default D16A1 (DOHC) in 90 Civic (EF)

Has anyone got any information on this swap? I know that it has previously been done, but I am looking for more information before I start fabricating custom mounts.

The DOHC D16A1 is equipped with the 3 mount setup, however the SOHC D16 in a 88-91 civic is equipped with 4 mounts. I need to retain the DOHC D16A1 (L3?) tranny, therefore there is no option of running a SOHC tranny. I am wondering if there is a way to use the OE DOHC rear mount as well as somehow either use a SOHC mount bolted to the DOHC head, or if a custom drivers side mount is also required.

Any insight will be much appreciated

This swap can be done but WHY

There was someone that had a motor mount kit for this swap for about $250, do a search. I would think there alot of other swaps you can do for the same amout of money and ALOT less work. If you really want to use that motor then find a 86-87 CRX-Civic Si and it will bolt right in to one of those cars. If you to keep the 88-91 Civic then go with a DOHC ZC or you can build the SOHC motor for the same amout of money you would have in the D16a1 swap.

i had a D16A1 in my 89 hatch dx. i used my sohc tranny so i have no clue how u;d set up another tranny. but to be honest, ur better off putting an 88-91 si d16a6 motor in it. it is the same thing. only difference with the DOHC is it will be louder engine.

also these motors tend to spin bearings so be very careful cuz mines went on me.

See, you're assuming I am talking about a stock engine. However in this case, I have a fully built D16A1 with an extensively modified D16A1 transmission to go along with it. If it was stock, obviously this swap would make no sense!

It Can fit i had a friend that put one in his rex. He had to make a new Driver side motor mount so it would fit.

However in his case is was not worth it. The mount held up but the motor blew about 10days later.

Thats how it Died.

Im sure some people will chime in and tell you its a waste of time.
And maybe for a Completly stock motor it is. But if its built then i say go for it. Good luck to you, and good luck on the fabing of the drivers motor mount.

Thanks. Well yes, the motor is completely built for road racing, very high end parts inside.

Interesting you say he had to make a custom drivers side mount. By a visual inspection, we believe the factory SOHC drivers side mount will bolt onto the DOHC. Do you have any insight on this?

Truthfully i dont i Was supposed to help him Fab it, but i never made it out that day. I personally was thinking the same thing. Just bolt up the SOHC mount.

He clamed that it wouldn't fit. But i wasn't there to make sure he wasn't just trying to put the mount on and not the whole mount assembely. I didn't question it enuff Cuz i didn't want to make him think he did all that work for nothing, if for some reson my thoery worked.
The way i see it, you have the SOHC mount, Its not like its that hard to unbolt one from the block. Hell you have to do that when you change a timming belt anyways. I say give it a try. Really you have nothing to loose.

Sorry for not being much more help. But this was done like 8 months ago, and it only lasted 10 days lol. So it wasn't really etched into my mind .

The big problem with this swap isn't the driver side mount

it'S the thermostat housing that doesn't clear the tranny

the SOHC mount would interfere with the timing belt on the DOHC engine.

i've tried it.

easiest route would probably be get a DOHC ZC block mount (if you can find one).

No... To tell you the truth the motor just plain out sucks for all motor applications.. There great boosted motors, the internals love it

B series > D series more expensive yes... but definetaly worth the money!
