I replaced the transmission on my 5 spd, 1993 Si. When I first started it up it ran fine for about a minute, then died. I started it up again and it ran for maybe 10 sec then died. Every time i start it, she runs for a few seconds less until it finally just wont start. After I wait a while I can start it up again, but it only runs for a few seconds before dying again. While the car is running the tach bounces a bit up and down about 500 rpm a few times before it dies. This lead me to believe that it may be a problem with the grounds or wiring around the distributor.

I cleaned all the connections on the transmission ground and tightened them down again with electrolitic grease on them. I checked for vacuum leaks, all good there. Fuel pump primes fine on startup. I pulled the plugs, they are pretty black with some dried carbon buildup. They smelled like gas, so im definately getting fuel into the cylinders. Plug wires are good and all in the proper order. I checked the cap and rotor for any problems. Its all clean under there as I recently replaced all the internal electronics, the coil, cap, and rotor. I put a little electrolitic grease where the cap touches the rotor and coil just in case. I checked the wires and connections from the distributor, and they look good too. I was wondering if the PGM-FI relay was going bad. But I just replaced that about 2 years ago, so I dont think that is the problem.

If anyone has any other ideas or suggestions, please post. I'm running out of ideas.

 

Check your timing.

 

Timing should not have changed. I never removed the distributor. But since I am out of ideas, I will double check just in case. Thanks for the input, anyone else?

 

is the ground on the tranny tight? on thermostat housing?

The grounds are definately good, I spent some time making sure of that. Did you say thermostat housing? I just ran an 10awg wire from the tranny to the chassis. Plus the one from the cylinder head to the chassis. Is that where the stock grounds run on a D16Z6?

 

Did you do anything else besides removing and replacing the tranny, inside or outside the car? sounds like fuel delivery but doesn't make sense, sorry man.

 

did u put ur distributor in wrong ?

 

turn the car on then when it dies dont turn off the key and see if there are any codes..

I would check the connectors for the MAP and other components near by that you touched when you did the tranny work.

 

There is no check engine light. But I will go over all the electrical connections again.

 

yea... check to see the ground on the thermostat housing.. it is a stupid 10 mm that can do some made $hit....hmm other than that.... sit in your car.... turn the key to on and see if u can hear the realy and the fuel pump hummm...... also see if u have spark.

 

The ground on the thermostat housing is good.

 

I'm new to Hondas, and i dont think this has anything to do with your tranny.BUT...

I have a 93 Si, just bought it. Owner said he had the same problem as you, got a new "relay"? (under the dash).........and it starts fine.

But I'm still kinda worried about it happening again. Does anyone know how to test if the PGM-FI relay is going bad? I'm assuming thats the relay you are talking about. Or does anyone know about any other relays under the dash that this could be?

like i told ya....ground will cause that!!!!
