.:HID QUESTION FOR 96-00 OWNERS:.
aight so i have acura TL HID's in my 2000 hatch and i was wondering what the effects would be if i was to take off the little refelctor thing inside the headlight housing that covers the main headlight bulb (not the turn signal reflector)..will my HID's be brighter? / have different aim? / have different color?
if anyone knows please let me know thanks in advance

that little reflector thing is the only thing that will keep people from going blind when you come done the road......EK headlights are horrible to have an HID KIT in anyways....i can only imagine how disgusting they would be without any sort of shield on the bulb....

Casper shields + removing that = great cutoff
EDIT: The now banned "fresh pizza guy" has that very setup and it's amazing. Way better than user who00knows' now sold car that had HIDs in the stock housings with the aiming peice still there.

I had some BMW HID's in my 98 stock housings, no alterations. They were so bright it was silly, even with the reflector in there you couldn't look at them. I loved driving with them it was like the sun never went down, but had to endure being hi-beamed by 1/3 of every oncoming car.

My friend did this to his HIDs and they are really damn bright. I'm surprised he hasn't gotten pulled over yet. As a courtesy for oncoming traffic and people ahead of you, don't do this.

is your friend using casper shields? - if he is NOT, then they would still be as bright (IE blinding oncoming traffic w/ton of misdirected light & glare) then as if the stock diffusers where still in the housings
NO ONE should retrofit HIDs bulbs into reflective housings without using some sort of CASPER SHIELD <--- get this through your heads
- *busts out the razor* "you wanna look like my avatar?"

i've always wondered if those casper shields hinder on the light output. and that kit you said you got is almost 700 bucks. but i dont doubt phillips cause thats what i had in my old accord. awesome stuff

those shields do not hinder the light output - basically redirects it to the area that should be lit (low beam area)...it does do ALOT to keep light from being shined upward into oncoming traffic...I have never been flashed (highbeams) by on coming traffic in over a year of having this kit
BTW high beam function does NOT work terribly well - due to the fact the the h4 halogen bulb is a dual filament bulb while HID capsules (bulbs) are not. there is a shutter that opens underneath the bulb that allows more light & glare to be cast up above the regular cutoff line
BTW I paid like ~ $600 shipped from england (2 day UPS)...tell them you are from H-T & they should cut a 'lil off the price...not too mention http://www.autolamps-online.com is one of the ONLY authorized philips HID suppliers out there (listed on philips main website) & their kit is the one of (if not the) only reflector housing HID retrofit kits legal in europe (ECE code - like DOT here in the states)

sorry but we aren't talking about halogen light here - have you ever seen HIDs in a halogen reflective housing without caspers.
aiming the housing down is NOT going to do much because the light thats cast out looks like this
NO CASPER SHIELD

see how much light is cast all the way up to the top of the garage
<U>VS.</U>
here is a couple of pics of my HIDs WITH CASPER SHIELDS

Thats why you cant buy HID kits for reflective housings anymore--Glare.
If you want a good HID setup and Pics go to http://www.hidplanet.com
They sell nice retrofits. go projectors you don't blind people with the glare

adirondackR, Do you have D2R or D2S type HID bulbs?
Did you leave the stock bulb shield in or take it out?
I just ordered a set of Casper shields and I have a set of Infinity I35 HIDs I'm planing to run in my '00 Si.
Any Suggestions on what I should do for the install? Paint anything or do any type of modifications to keep the glare to a minimum without cutting to much light out from the actual bulb.
Thanks!
-Jeff

these shields ( https://www.casperselectronics..._Code ) are plug & play with OE D2S or D2R bulbs for headlamps that use h4 bulbs (the shield actually runs the length of the bottom of the bulb - which cuts the light off from being reflected upward).

the HID kit I bought uses a D2S bulb (typically used in projectors only) but you can see the casper shield that comes with my kit is specifically designed to be used with that. lol...here is your answer about the diffuser/shield built into USDM headlight housings

I don't have any other suggestions off hand. if you like buy 1 single headlamp housing (spare) & bake it up in the oven & remove the diffuser/shield thats built in - then put it back together & take comparison pics one light with diffuser & one without. Its my opinion you might get slightly better output without the shields but I don't know if it also increases glare. good luck

not only do you NOT blind oncoming cars, you put MORE light to the ground with retrofits.
all a casper shield does is stop light from hitting your reflective housing.
if youre not gonna do a retrofit...i dont think you should get HID's.
also the 96-00 reflective headlight housing SUCKS with HID's in'em.

mine arent bad, i never get headlights flashed at me. theyre aimed nicely, and theres HARDLY any glare that comes above (jagged) cutoff line.
i think if youre just voicing the opinion on here with no experience, just hopping on the bandwagon like everyone else that passes around false info here on h/t, then just gtfo out of this thread.
