Default Need Input: Buying 4th Gen VTEC.

I went to look at a 4th Gen Prelude VTEC today. To those who know me, bump this for me.

-88,000 miles on the odometer
-5 speed
-Everything stock except for exhaust (installed) by dealer.
-New brakes
-Car was owned teh son owner of a Honda dealer, well maintained.
-Engine runs perfect, no hesitation, VTEC kicks in very strong.
-Clutch feels brand new, shifting is great

Now the only thing wrong with the car is the fading red paint. Anyone know the name of the color? A couple of other things wrong are the antenna doesn't retract, dent on rear passenger quarter panel w/ slight rust.

Other than what I just mentioned, the car runs perfect and strong. The interior is pretty clean, leather is in mint condition.

So my question is:

1) How much should I pay? (I got it down to $5500)

2) What are the common problem for 4th gens? (CV boots, recalls, syncro...etc)

Also, I'm going to carfax the VIN soon. Any help would be appreciated.

BTW, I'm trading in my 93 Impreza, they gave me $500 allowance.

Edit: just got carfax report, the car has a clean title! w00t.

I would go for it. Its hard to find 4th gen factory vtec prelude for under 8k. With 88K goodluck finding a 4th gen vtec with that low miles Go for it

Yeah, I got lucky. The salesman said there were 25+ people checking it out, all young guys. But they all wanted to finance for 5 years, so the dealer said "cash only".

He said the same thing to me, but I told him I wanted to finance it for only 2 years. Plus he knew I was serious after he told me "cash only" and I still went for a test drive all by myself.

So he worked out a deal for me, I should know if i get approved by tomorrow morning. I got the price to $5500 from $7995.

The car is awesome, powerwise felt like my 5th gen SH, just lighter and faster.

Sounds like a decent deal to me, i picked up my '93 vtec lude for 4100 with 125000 miles on it and no major scratches except for my front bumber is messed up by i have no idea what and the rear bumper has paint faded away from the exhaust. common problems with a 4th gen is they burn oil when in vtec. thats all the problems i know of so far. Good luck with the purchase if you get it, great car!!

Well, those probs you described are the major things that go wrong with ludes for! haha, The antennas suck ***, mine freezes in the winter and sticks up and I've seen a few where the motor dies out. As for the rust, I think almost every honda (and 4th gen lude for that matter) gets rust there. I've had it taken care of only to have it come back again! boo! I'd say that that is a good price for a lude. As for the color, it's called milano red, but you gotta make sure it's for the 4th gen lude because I believe that honda made a different milano red for each make and gen of car because my milano red is totally different from that of my buddy's 95 civic! haha or maybe my eyesight is just starting to go! who knows!

Only thing I would ask is if the t-belt service has been done with 88K on her. But everything sounds good...I would really look at the exterior and interior and condition of it.

But that is low miles and a decent price . Might I suggest some m7's

I asked the salesman about the T-belt, he said "I have all the records, this car was owned by the son if this dealership."

That truly sucks about the rust.

Thanks for the advice.

Is there a way to tell if your timing belt hasn't been changed? cracked belts or something?

Yah, and I think the funny part is that the two are related! Someone said that the water seeps into the hole where the antenna is and then it drains out by the fender well. My buddy said that there was a little drain tube down there or something! haha, so yah, both probs do suck!!

nope...not without opening the engine..and its not worth the time to open it JUST to check..u will just change it...i know ppl that change the belts within 60,000 miles just to be safe...so im guessing you're car has because of its relationship with the dealer..but to be safe make sure they show u records of them changing it...and if they dont....make them bring the price 500-700 lower...then change it...its not worth the risk...

edit: 60,000KM...60,000 miles is recommended

well not really, i had a lude before the STi. now i got the best of both worlds.

AWD + Turbo + VTEC =

The 4th Gen feels way quicker/lighter than the 5th. Now I know why everyone says

4th > 5th gen

5th > 4th any day. just looks better IMO, unless you are a balla like @ries; then its a toss up.

The 5th gen do look sleeker, a bit sexier. But the 4th gen is growing on me, plus the performance killed the 5th gen.

It comes with leather! hahaha

haha, sup Juan? How's the car running?

Since I test drove the 4th gen, I'm in love. the 5th gen is a wee bit sleeker, but I've seen some pretty hot 4th gens on HT.

sup peter, my pos is running fine, except that it is auto.

Oh well, some time in the future i can catch up with you guys in stickshift mode, well, i can see you coming back to our fatass lude klan. I hope you get this bitch and do some crazy sti spanking... (right like the prelude would kill that thing).

Good luck with the purchase and man you sold the exhaust, but i am looking for a quiet one.

Thanks for everything, hey fools let's find some good 4th gen vtec for this guy.

I remember you telling me it's auto. Yeah I'm coming back to the Honda scene, back to my roots!

haha the only way i can spank STi's is if i put a big snail in the prelude.

I haven't sold the exhaust yet, someone is interested in it though but needs to gather money. The 5zigen is quiet at idle but a beast at WOT.

Thanks for the wishes.

Try some wd40 on the antenna or think about maybe an s2k antenna instead. And the paint #should be on the inside of the driver's side door. I could be wrong though, I'm mostly a toyota guy but I think its the same place on pretty much all cars.

Price sounds good buy the way. Sound like really small things to fix.
