Default LS-vtec How hard is it drop a vtec head on

With the LS block, how hard would it be to put a GSR or TypeR head on.
Of course the R-spec head would be more powerful, but are we looking at
a big difference in horsepower?

Either slap on a B16 or B18c5 head, they flow the best of the 3.... and depending on how good a job you do builidng it (its not just a "slap on" thing) i've heard between 160-->190

ls/vtec is something that a professional engine builder or someone having too much time messing with it. I used to have one before I went straight b16. The engines not made for eachother. Too many parts come to play and it's like putting a puzzle together. When completed it's awesome, but street race it for a good month and you have a blown head gasket to major internal problems (from experience). Only do it if you have to. If you blew your bottom b16 and don't want to hook up another b16 bottom, then yeah, give it a shot. If you just want to do it because of just because people says it's powerful...it is. If you are willing to take the good side of the ls/vtec, then you are willing to be willing to also take the bad of it too. I've spent close to $5000 on it and let me tell you, "it ain't worth the trouble..."

No offense, but how the hell did it cost 5000$ for your ls-vtec
You could of had a typeR motor dropped it at that expense!

Like I said...try having 3 blown head gaskets, stupid $hit happening like oil leaks, all that is costing $$$. That's why I, "stay away if you don't have the $$$ to play with. People that had problems with ls/vtec knows the problem. You on the other hand have not ran into something of that tragic.

This topic has been brought up over and over again. The reliability of a LS/VTEC basically boils down to 3 factors IMO. The parts used, who/how its built, and how its driven. When I mean parts... I mean parts like a new R oil pump, water pump, belts, bearings, block guard, rod&head bolts, etc. And second (which is the most important factor)... the engine is only as good as the person who built it. PERIOD!!
Last.. how is the motor driven? How many of those LS/VTEC's are abused? You guys cant tell me that if you had a brand new LS/VTEC you would be giving it a good "run" to test it out. Then.. you guys go out and show it off to your friends and at the street races. I'm not saying this is what everyone does... but its what most hybrid owners do to their "new toys".

Yeah, I will only build them if the person is willing to do it right with the right parts. I guess thats why I have never had them come back.....

It all depends on what parts you plan on using. How much work your block/head will need. At a minimul you will need all new belts, pumps, bearings, ARP head/rod bolts and resurfacing. Most set ups go N/A which is the more expensive then turbo.

5k on an LS/VTEC? You could buy a CR-VTEC with that much and put 230 to the wheels. Professionally built and reliable too. For another grand you could get the 250 hp one...If you build it (or have it built) right, I don't see what the problems would be.

Oh...and the type R is NOT worth the money at all.

Just to slap a head on does not take to much work at all, of course if you know what your doing its a lot easier. But if you just slap the head on and do nothing else to the block. Don't expect it to last to long.

you sir, are an idiot.

im sorry but was that relivent to his question? no, he wants to know how hard it would be, not whether "Ls Vtecs suck" or not. so you are sayin anyone who uses a ls/vtec motor is a *****? why is that? and do you have any personal experience with the motor?

i have to say, after close friends having ls and crv blocks mated with the 16 head. when built right, yes the crv will give you more power. but they are both just as reliable as the other. as i said, WHEN BUILT RIGHT.
