89 upper ball joint question
Can the ball joint be replaced or does the whole arm need to be replaced also, I am hearing numerous things. Can any confirm anything, also anyone know of any sites that sell just the upper ball joint ?
i went through this a while ago and was told that the 88-89 upper balljoints were not removable from the upper control arms and that the 90-91 upper control arms had the removable balljoints, but i dont know where to find the upper control arms for the 90-91 cars. i work at an autoparts store and could not locate these pieces, only thing i could get were the actual ball joints for the 90-91's or the whole upper control arm with balljoint for the 88-89 which i believe would work on all 88-91 cars.
hope that helped.

Well I called a few shops and pepboys does sell just the ball joint but I don't trust pepboys. Also autozone has them on there computer but they needed to order them, and when they tried the company did not even stock them so I could not get them either. I ended up just buying the arm but I'm still wondering if the ball joint alone is replaceable.

Good find, I was not able to inspect the ball joint/upper arm because I was a little busy. All I know is, I went to separate the ball joint and instead of the normal separation the ball joint separated from the arm
. I can only imagine the bad things that could of occured if that would of happen while driving. Try pepboys because they did tell me they sold just the ball joint.

i dont have a local pepboys. there is a C-clip that is supposed to hold the ball joint into the arm, pull it out then press out the joint. yours must have been missing the c-clip.

Sadly enough I don't think so, the ball joint popped out of the a arm and was still stuck in the steering knuckle, it basically bonded with the steering knuckle hub so even when the steering knuckle and control arm separated the ball joint was still stuck in the steering knuckle and I do mean stuck. It had to be pounded out. And it was not the hole ball joint, it was only the swivel part, no ball joint is suppose to come apart like that so easily you know. I'll get picks up and it will explain it a little better.
Edited : I took some pics, this is how it came out, I never whipped it off. I never took a ball joint apart but from my understand there suppose to be packed with grease.

Call the dealer...they'll tell you the same thing everyone esle does, there is no balljoint replacement for the upper control arm. You have to replace the UCA completely. You can find aftermarket UCAs that have a removeable/adjustable balljoint, however, the OEM one is not able to be replaced sadly enough.
I just replaced my 89 UCA's with aftermarket ones. They were stock replacements, nothing fancy, and came with NEW replaceabe style ball joints. I think i paid somewhere around 30-40$ per side. They also came with NEW bushings.
BTW, my original 89 UCA's appeared to have the ball joints welded in.

I also just bought some new UCA's for my new project crx. They come with replaceable ball joints which are held in by a C clip. I got themm off ebay for $70. They apear to be good quality. The stock UCA's do not have replaceable ball joints. It is a wise investment to get the after market ones with the replaceable balljoint so you don't have to replace the whole arm.

I don't think that is true, specially when krustindumm said he got the ball joint out.

Start your own thread, or if you need help IM me. If you only hear it when you brake I would look into your brakes. I really want this thread to help people out that have ball joint issues.

Every 88-89 style arm I have seen have them welded in. They may be able to separate (as in break off) but looking at them again, im about 99.9% sure they are pretty much in there for good.
I have an 89 hatch, therefore my UCA have the ball joints welded in (at least on my car they did). If i had a 90-91 car, then i would have had the UCA that have the replaceable style ball joints, and therefore i could have gotten aftermarket replacement ball joints. They may not sell them at a dealership, but i can get a hold of aftermarket OEM style ones.
So u are saying that 88-89 OEM (original to the car) UCA's have replaceable style joints?
