I just purchased a 97 GSR with 106k miles. The gears do not grind just third gear pops out if you don't have your hand pushing on it when you release the clutch. Can anyone tell me what it could be and how much it would cost for parts and labor? Orlando, FL if anyone can do the work for me.

 

Does the tranny have fluid in it? Could just be a synchro/collar going out, sorry I don't live in FL so I can't help ya with any shops, etc. if you don't wanna do it yourself. Good Luck

Im pretty sure the tranny has fluid in it. It never been tampered with. Im thinking about getting some GM syncromesh or somthing like first. But.. i do know alot about trannies, would it something hard to fix?

 

Yea first of all I would just take the time to drain your tranny fluid. Use what you want, I personally have never used GM Synchromesh but I've heard decent things about it. I actually just use Honda MTF and Redline MTL. If that doesn't fix your problems then it's probably the 3rd gear synchro or the fork is bent. Luckily it's pretty easy to change either of these pieces if you need to (the 3rd-4th synchro is on the mainshaft which makes it nice as you don't need a press to remove the gearstack). All you really need to do is pull the tranny and open it up.

Bad lugs on the gears and shift dog and possible bent shift fork. Changing fluid will be a waste of time and money .02

does it the tranny grind, when going into third at any rpm?

 

Third gear or any gear doesn't grind when putting it into gear.

 

If it doesn't grind then most likely it's only a bent shift fork. Either way its rebuild time.

 

Gotcha.... Anyone know where i could purchase these parts for good price? Could you tell if the fork is bent by visibly looking at it?

not necesarily, did you take that tranny off resently? if your car is lowered, have you felt it bottom out resently? has any part of the car hit the ground resently? let me know!

When you pull the shift fork out look at the sides of the fork to see if there are any wear marks anywhere other than on the tips of the fork. It will be pretty obvious if it's jumping out all the time.

And if you had bottomed out or otherwise damaged the shift linkage you would be having trouble in more than one gear. Like 1st, 3rd and 5th

 

The gsr is stock, no mods done to it at all. Its at stock height. The gear only pops out when you don't have your hand on the shifter ONLY when you left of the clutch. If you slow down in 3rd gear then punch it, it will not pop out.

 

I used to work for Acura until 99 rebuilt alot of teg trannys with the same problem. 3rd and 1st gear forks usually along with the dogs and corresponding gears.

Don Mealy Acura in Longwood I understand they moved up to sanford/lake mary now

 

alright well. I guess i will do the work. I will read up alot on it before i go tackle the job. where could i get parts for thet tranny?
