Accuracy of stock guages..
How accurate are they?
Since I have been about 3' tall ive always liked gauges and clocks and things that display information, so of course when the opportunity presented itself I had my parents pick me up a phantom series Autometer tach for Xmas. Since im getting an H22 in May, i figured it would compliment it nicely.
Here is where it gets interesting. Both my stock tach and the Autometer would display my idle at about 800rpms or so. With my stock tach i had brought the revs to 6800 or so a couple times which is where the rev limiter kicks in. With the Autometer installed I set the shift light at 6400 which is where i usually shift to get the most out of the car and proceeded to go through first gear where I was greeted with a suprise, the rev limiter kicked in at just before 6400, id say 6350. I tried it again just to be sure, 6350. VTEC though did engage at the same RPM on both tachs. It seemed the higher the revs went the more inaccurate the stock one was. 450rpms in my opinion is way off. I checked with a couple Techs at Honda today at work and they all said around 6400 for the stock rev limiter and it says the same in the Honda service manual as well. When I see pictures of h22's accords revving to 8k it makes me wonder too, is that really 8k? USDM H22s and regular JDM H22s redline at 7500 or so and Type S's rev to 7800. I doubt they have an extra 500rpms to play with. What do you guys think?

No it's not 8K. The tach reads 400 RPMs high on the top end. USDM H22 redline is 7,300 and fuel cut at 7,700 (actual) but tach indicates 8,100! So when an Accord or Prelude tach reads 8K, it's still below the factory fuel cut, but of course above factory redline.
The tach is pretty funky. It reads a hair above 1K at idle when the V-AFC shows ~800 RPMS. It's pretty accurate from 3K to 5.5K, but after that it reads high.

another one back from the dead...
Factory 5th gen accord gauges are about the same size as the full size autometer tachs, i should take an interior shot, it looks nice tucked in the corner of the a-pillar, like it belongs there. I would recommend a shift lift to anyone, not having to keep ur eye on the tach and keeping them on the road is a great confidence booster. Its still one of my favorite things about my car.

IMO, a 5 inch tach is extremely gay especially if you don't have an h22. Unless you have a civic with a swap that doesn't have a tach you really don't need one. You can buy a autometer shift light separetly if you want one. Then all you need is the V-AFC if you have an H22 to see where you should be shifting relative to the stock tach. My stock is way off, at about 7,800 I read 7,200 on the V-AFC. Once I know this you learn to shift where you should.
If I do get a shift light its going to be one of the smaller led jobs. A friend of mine has it and its bad ***. No bigger than a pen and completly unnoticable.
