Default Can I remove the rear bumper support?

I'm looking at removing some weight from my porky little CRX, and was wondering if I could remove the rear steel bumper support and still have the bumper bolt on correctly?

I've never removed the rear bumper, so i don't really know how its all setup. Just wondering if anyone has done this, and if its even worth it?

This is pretty much a race car, so I'm not worried about the crash worthiness of the bumpers.

I offer no help.. just want to chime in and say don't do it.

There is no die-hard reason to do it and without if you're in a fender bender the impact gets transfered into your unibody with much greater force. Leaving it in is probably the difference in wrecking a bumper and wrecking the body.

There are better ways to remove weight on an otherwise already light car.

Good luck in your info hunt though.

Like what?

I've already removed all of the rear interior (the front stays!)

The next thing to go is the door mounted seat belts.

Right now the car weighs about 2170 with a half tank.

If you're just drag racing, I wouldn't worry about the crash safety, it would be a neat trick to see someone back a crx into something on a drag strip.

Other shtuff to lighten, I don't know what you've done:
kirkey seats (or whatever aluminum shell you like)
smaller battery
fuel cell
carbon fiber hood, fenders, hatch
plexiglas windows
tubular front crossmember

If it's an Si:
sunroof delete
tilt wheel delete

There's tons of other stuff, replacing **** with aluminum, etc. Just my $.02

I have

Sparco Fighter2s
Motorcycle battery
Can't use fuel cell in SFWD class
I have VIS CF SIR hood
the body is perfect so I don't think I wanna touch it
JimFab

I guess I'll just take off the rear bumper and have a lookie.

Yes you can remove the support. The best thing to do is cut the center portion and leave the outer parts to hold the bumper up. That will save you a bit as they are fairly heavy. That is what I did and was not worried about crash worthiness. Just my suggestion and my suggestion is only my opinion!

I have heard that the hf rear bumper support is the lightest of the dx or si...maybe its less beefy than the others or is smaller in some way?? Not too positive on this but its worth checking into if you didnt wanna hack up your bumper support.

The HF supports are def the lightest. They really look like brackets more than anything else. Just look at one and you'll see the huge difference. I drive my CRX to and from track day events so I just cut mine up to remove some weight.

Or make your own.
These are only good up to 10mph anyway so they sure wont do much.

this chevy super 10 1974 hit me other day from the back.

the support helped a lot hes whole front end was mashed in.

luckly my car is high at the back and it was a direct hit on the bumper since the super 10 was lowered.

to the support beam

these 88-91 hondas are pretty strong they beams everywhere door front back I have seen some get tboned the door beams held up..

to everyone that has removed their rear bumper support (or even the front) what issues did you have with mounting the bumper? You say you just got rid of the whole thing? HOw is it mounted, i mean I know the 2 bolts on each side of the bumper on the inner fender wells but other than that dosent it sag in the middle. I just cant see mounting a big heavy WW urethane bumper like I have without the middle of the bumper support holding it up......

As far as the front goes...I don't see how you could mount it without it.

I just took a huge chunk out from the center, but left all the mounting points.

For my front.....If I can remember correctly....I removed the front bumper support..then attached my JDM bumper directly...meaning the 4 or 3 bolts in the middle...and the screws on the side....
