Is it possible to drop in Toda b's and get an OK idle without having a VAFC?
Can you get a decent idle out of Spec B's without any sort of aftermarket fuel controller like a VAFC or Fields?I don't have one at the moment.I do have a fuel press. reg though if that could help at all and adjustable cam gears.
You can dial out some of the overlap at idle with the cam gears. That will smooth things out a little. (*EDIT* that will obviously dial out overlap everywhere, leading to a loss in power, FYI).
It's also nice to have some fine fuel tuning, though, so I would address that ASAP if you're going to get the cams.

Black R are you running stock or aftermarket valve springs and retainers...
I know that my car wouldn't idle without leaning it out ~25% and even if I did what yack suggested, why? Have a good (stock) idle would mean a loss of power for me... Been there, done that. Besides, you have to tune and will need a vafc for that.....
My car can idle without any fuel controller with Spec B, but I did have Yoshio reprogrammed the ECU. With Spec B, you will need to get something to control the fuel in order to have it run good. For some reason, when I adjust the cam gear, the idle was not affected by too much. I even have setting like +5, -4, and it still idle almost the same as it is at 0,0.
you have to run some kind of fuel controll vafc,ect.... unless you don't care about your car ildeing..mine at 0,0 settings need to run about -24@1000 to keep it running...also vafc or power fc will let you tune out more power
It is possible to get a lumpy idle without any stalling ... only a very few prolly know how to do this.

My spec B idle at around 800rpm, usually very stable, but sometime it go up and down from 650-950rpm. MY cam gear setting is at +4,+1 now. And I leaned out the idle by -6% with the VAFC. I think timing is set at 18 degree.

Well, my car can idle even if I set 1000@ +3%, but since I want to save some gas when I have to warm up my car in the winter, I use the VAFC to lean it out a little bit. I don't know if I can lean out some more, but probably can.
Since the engine is running very lean in all other RPM range (+10 to +15%) else where, I would guess the idle wouldn't need to be lean out too much with the current ECU program.
