Xx Canister muffler with passenger side exit... help with bumper x x
i'm going to install this cheap-o canister muffler on my beater but i want it to exit the passenger side instead of the driver's side....
i've seen a pic of a green crx with this done and he had "moved" the notch for the tip from the other side so that i actually looked like it belonged like that.
i'd like to do this but i wasn't sure how to go about the body work on the bumper....
any suggestions would be great. thanks

I would believe the easiest way to do it would be to
1) Make an outline (Perfectly) of the stock exhaust hole in the bumper
2) Transfer outline of stock hole to location of where you would like the new hole
3) Cut out new whole
4) Using great techniques involving molding, transfer cut piece to stock hole.
That would be the idea of someone who has never done body work, but if worse comes to worse you can always fabricate a custom bumper to work for your needs.

Cut a rectangle around the stock cutout and use that as a pattern for the cutout your going to make on the other side. (Cutting a rectangle is easier than trying to follow the outline of the stock cutout.)
Once these pieces are removed and make sure they fit as best as possible in the spot where they'll be "welded". Now bevel the edges of both the bumper and the pieces to fit in the bumper so that you have a "V" groove when the pieces are in place. Now you need to buy some plastic weld. I used Solder-It Plastic Weld http://www.solder-it.com/solderpaste.asp I found in both the automotive section and plumbing section at a Pep Boys style store. It comes in a syringe style applicator and once its in place you heated it with a flame and it hardens. Then use a flexible autobody filler to smooth it all out.

those were two great suggestions guys.
i really appreciate the time you spent to explain your suggestions.
i'm a little lazy so i think i'm going to go with the "rectangle" cutting approach and hope that it works... if not another bumper is only about $35 or so.
i'll post pics of the process and finishing product once i get started on this but it probably won't be for about a week.
can anyone make suggestions as to what i should do about the finish on the bumper? i'm going to have to paint the lower black half of the bumper to hide the "welds" but i'm trying to decide if i should paint it using the (duplicolor brand maybe?) rattle can plastic specific paint from autozone that supposedly bonds to plastic.... or if i should use a black "vinyl" paint that you would commonly use on the dash, door panels, etc....
anyone that's painted all the moldings on your crx.... your input would be appreciated. i obviously can't paint JUST the rear bumper so i want to make sure whatever i use I can use for ALL the moldings on the car.
Thanks in advance.
-Erik <--- will search for suggestions on painting the moldings also...
