Quick shift knob question?

Quick shift **** question?
What's that nut for when you buy a JDM shift ****? I put the **** on and have this nut that was shipped with it? Dumbfounded. I sound like a newbie.

The nut threads onto the shifter first, then the **** screws on. Once the **** is threaded on and lined up correctly, the nut is tightened against the ****.
