Default B16B BHP=185 - Is this true with any VTEC head?

I have the opportunity to buy a B16B (CTR) short block. The 'net says this is a 185hp engine. My question is if this is true no matter what head I slap on or does it have to be a type r head.

I have a B16 head with a P&P from Alaniz and a flow chart stating if outperforms a virgen Type r head. If I use this will I get 185 horses?

Thanks!

b16b= rev monster.
it already has an arrrrr head.
its basically a b16 (stroke wise) but with a b18 higher deck block; making of a great RS ratio

if your head is b16 head that you are gonna put on should outperform a type r head then yeah you should have around 185 hp, or more?? b16b is high compression. it depends on the cams u have too though. b16b is ctr cams.

That's what I though - higher compression but MMULLER above says the deck is taller. So are the rods longer?

MMULER, can you elaborate or point me to a web site that give more info? Thanks!

yeah, rods are longer on the b16b and also pct pistons have a different compresson height than the rest; 1.210" for pct compared to like lets say pr3's 1.180".

If I'm running a B16a, is a B16b a good upgrade?

depends on your goals for the car, you could easily make your b16a faster for cheaper than the b16b

A B16B is a destroked Type R. The block is an ITR block, just has the shorter stroke and a little less compression. 10.8 vs. 11. Put your P&P'ed head on and use CTR cams and you'll be above 185.

YES the head makes a difference.. combustion chambers are shaped differently as well as the valves and etc...

b16b are good motors. I had a b16a second gen before. This motor loves to be revved. I sold my b16a and got this motor for about same cost. If you have a chance to get the B16b complete motor head,block,tranny your going to have some serious fun. then later on drop the gsr crank, rods, ctr pistons, maybe get some head work and tunning and cams your set....

b16b are not cheap if you find a good deal hop on it you won't be dissapointed if the motor is in healthy condition
