Never overlook the obvious!
I posted that I had a severe oil burning problem a few weeks ago. After agonizing over what the hell it could be, rings, seals, etc it turned out to be a bad pcv valve. I never thought a bad pcv valve could cause this kind of problem but it can. I was sucking down a quart or more every 5 days with normal driving, smoke was literally billowing out the exhaust on light acceleration.
I should have known from my days working as a GSE mechanic/field service engineer in the airline industry that most problems are easy to solve and easy to find and simple yet are overlooked.
This is what set it off, did a compression test and I spiked the 250 psi gauge on all 4 cylinders, did a leakdown test and it was less than 20 psi for all four cylinders.
Pulled the pcv valve out and it was gone. Replaced it and no mo smoke coming out. I still have some smoke when I go into vtec but I have about a mm thick of oil soot in my exhaust and I suspect its from that but i'm not sure.
Anyway, the lesson learned here is don't overlook the obvious when troubleshooting your car!

I've been pondering replacing my PCV valve. I have 38,000 miles on the car so far. Should I get the real deal (Honda PCV valve) or the cheap deal (generic one from Pep Boys)?
Its located underneath the intake manifold, look for a black box its on ther you can a black hose with an l shaped fitting that goes to the box that's it.
in my opinion its always better to replace a part like with oem but pep boys will work. also cost may be cheaper too.
