my car DIED on the way to work today
As i was pulling into my work parking lot, my car stalled. as i was still rolling i tried to start again and it turned over like no compression. i thought 'oh great, the timing belt...' i had just engough momentum to roll into a spot. i tried cranking again and for a second it had compression and fired and sputtered out and died. I tried it again and now it turns over like no compression all the time. what the hell could THAT be?

...took off the timing cover on break and saw my timing belt all loose and the cam timing out of whack. i lined everything back up at TDC and put the belt back on and i cant get my belt tensioner to tighten. is there a trick to getting the tensioner to tighten?

cal gear? did you mean cam gear or crank. rotate the cam gear clockwise so its tight on the frontside and tighten the 14mm bolt?

Crank pulley, if you have a socket turn it three times and it will tighten up, I.E. three complete revolutions of the pulley, if the tensioner is working properly.
I was just gonna ask you if you were sure the timing belt still had the teeth on it right before I scrolled down and saw your pic. Same thing happened to me in my Teg and it survived.
