VSS(speed sensor) Need help, searched already!
Ok...so I just did my engine swap. I had a B16 before, I built an ITR block and slapped the B16 head and tranny on. The motor runs like a champ! My speedometer doesnt work now and I have a CEL, I'm pretty sure its 17 VSS. I've re-pinned the plug with new pins. I even put my brothers known working speed sensor in there and it still doesnt work! Theres a ground on the thermo housing I think, its good. I'm soo lost, I don't know what else might be wrong...The VSS fuse is good too btw. When I first swapped the B16 in a couple years ago I had the same problem but just cleaned the plug and sensor and it worked fine. I need help! Could there be a bad connection at the ecu harness? I have a 96' EK and its been jumped from OBD2 to OBD1....Any ideas? Anyone know what order the wires go to the VSS? Thanks guys...
tried swapping in my old DX guage cluster last night..still didnt work. I've used my brothers known working VSS, still doesnt work...I dont know, this sucks though

As soon as I get my other computer with all my diagrams back up (the piece of **** crashed, lol) I'll get some pics loaded up that I made of the VSS circuit. I can tell you this for right now but it'll probably be hard to understand. If you aren't aware of what the three wires going to the VSS do here it is. There is a power (normally a yellow wire with a black stripe - yel/blk) a ground (normally all black), and a signal (normally blue). The yel/blk is a 12V+ switched power so you can test for this when your ignition is on 2nd click. The black ground will always be there so just continuity test it over the chassis. If you have continuity then the wire is good and you're fine. What the VSS does is for ever 360 degrees of rotation it generates four ~5V+ pulse which the gauge cluster and ECU can interpret. I've never really tried to test for the signal wire but it would probably be easiest to pull the VSS out of the tranny, with it still plugged in (and if you know you have a power and ground) when you rotate it slowly you should see a pulse (whether you're using a test light or voltmeter). The problem here is if you know the VSS is good and you have +/- at the connector then it should have a signal going out, it just may be not making it all the way back to the cluster (broken wire, short). So what we're really looking for here is to ensure that you've got power at the VSS connector and the signal wire is good (if you've got a known good VSS). The other thing is, your speedo ring gear inside the tranny is still there, correct. If you don't know for sure just look down in the VSS port, you'll see it on the diff. With the car in neutral rotate both wheels (assuming you have an open diff.) and really just make sure all the gears teeth are still there. Sorry again to ramble on so much but I'll get the diagrams up just as soon as I can and they are easier to understand. Good Luck
wow...thanks alot man! You're giving me some direction in this problem
I'm thinking that it probably just some bad wiring somewhere in the wiring harness. Its gonna be hard to check for that though, the amount or wiring and space are very limited. Is there anyway to hard wire the wires directly to a power source, ground, and speedo or wherever the final destination of the other wire is? ****...what to do? Thanks again for your help man! I really appreciate it

Problem solved! After I re pinned the plug I put the wires in wrong. I thought all along that the black wire went in the middle..dumbass me for not remembering the sequence of the wires
Good to hear, sorry I never got you that diagram but I can't get my main comp (the one with all my ****) back online...
