okay I have been having a wierd problem with my headlights on my 89 civic sedan occasionally dimming or turning off for a second then going back on full... any one else had this sort of problem?

I did put in some projector headlights I got on ebay but I had them in for at least 4 months before I first had problems.... so I don't know if it is a wiring thing or not...

Did you solder the wires when you put the lights in or did you use tape..??
Maybe you have a loose connection somewhere..?

 

well the headlights came with adaptors so I just pluged in the OEM connectors to them... maybe it could be a loose connection inside those though.... I just didn't know if there was some kind of relay I could check but I dont' think one exists for the headlights.... oh but when they dim they BOTH go at the same time... not just one

 

When they dim does the car feel like it wants to cut off..

 

nope, its just at random times... just cruising on the freeway or coming home from work...

my advice

get a multimeter and start testing the line from the headlights to the fusebox... check fuse too, who knows maybe its on the way out.

 

ya I have checked fuses and I have one fuse for each side.... any ideas why BOTH sides would dim or turn off like that at the same time?

check voltage while driving , I had the same problem , no real method to the madness.

my entire cars lighting system was suffering from an alternator with a bum voltage regulator , I ran around for days with a mulitmeter and it finally happened , turns out I was getting over 15 volts on the tester when the problem would take place.

just a thought.

 

interesting... I have a recently replaced alternator ( less than 1 year) but occasionally I get up to 15 someting volt peaks just randomly. I wonder how that makes the lights dimmer... I would have though it would increase the intensity... and wattage... hmm

I'm getting peaks of 15.6 and drops as low as 12ish...

 

okay I have increased my theory a bit... more times than not, at the moment my headlights turn off it is when I flick the left blinker, but not often... and my foglights stay on all the time too... it couldn't be voltage spikes... when I get the chance I want to take apart my steering column and check connections...

 

Your head lights have a relay much like the MAIN relay. When mine went bad that is what it was doing. Lights would dim or flash on and off. then they were fine. I would check that.

 

I was wondering at one point if there was a relay for them... where is it located? I have been unable to find it.
