Newbie Welding Questions
Might want to add this to the FAQ, its pretty sparse.
I just bought the little Bernzomatic welding kit from Home Depot and have a few questions.
Do I need to wear those goggle things while welding with MAPP and oxygen?
How strong will these welds be?
How do I weld?
What define's a good weld, from a poor weld?
Thanks.

if you are talking about oxy acetylene welding then chances are it wont look prety.
it is almost not practical for use on a car because it is such a dirty process ,there is no kind of shielding for the metal when it is melted and the weld will get oxygen in it and that makes for a very very weak and ugly weld.

what welds are u looking to do?
what u have is refered to as brazing not welding (almost like soltering). u can use the brazing rods with the flux or just use a straight copper rod.. The good thing about the brazing rods is that they are easy to sand. Its a pretty time consuming prosess. Also the brazing rods dont rust. U need to where ur goggles and heat up the material just till its slightly red and then add/melt the rod on top and with the flame try to swirl it around the molten to acheive a nice bead. Where the goggle sometimes if u dont heat the metal up enough and at the brazing rod it just tend (pop off the material and blow out the flame). The Welds are pretty strong (just like welding). One very bad thing is when u heat ur material do little parts at a time or else u will warp the metal. I suggest not to use on headers, exhaust (heat and the brazing rods dont mix) but u need alot of heat.

welding with mapp gas is probably not your best choice. i don't have experience in this area but from what i heard, it doesn't get hot enough to do any kind of effective welding. oxy acetylene would be a better choice. in the old day's before the day's of electric arc welding and everything in that category including mig and tig, they built race cars with oxy acetylene. if you want, i can post pic's of nice exhaust manifold's and such built using oxy acetylene.
it wouldn't be my first choice to weld using gas in this day and age but it can be done with practice.
if your serious about learning how to weld, my suggestion would be to invest in some better equipment that won't limit your progress
