Try checking the filter on the Vtec solenoid, and make sure your oil level/pressure is good.
You will probably have to take the solenoid off to check, not quite sure.

when i can't hear my vtech very well, i usually adjust the volume on the side of the handset. those ringers are cheap

on a serious note, have you checked the oil pressure and level? a lot of people's vtec problems are rooted to oil.

how old is your fuel filter, check your injectors;secondaries. are you burning oil at a fast rate? check the oil level over a period of time (that was stolen from the 5 ppl before me )

I would take it somewhere and have it looked at. Chances are if you can't spell it, you don't need to be going at it with any tools.
