Just a small question before I go tearing apart my tranny. I have a GSR tranny that has worked flawlessly for the past 4 years, but yesterday I noticed it was a little rough going into the gears. This was during normal driving, revving around 4500 to 5500 rpm during the shifting. I also noticed a high pitched whurring noise when i put the car into 1st gear and I had to put a little bit more force into my shifting.
I got home and did a little troubleshooting, noticed my clutch reservior was very low, put in some DOT4 fluid, bled the system and thought I had fixed my problem...wrong. I went on a test drive today and also noticed the same problems during higher rpm shifting. I consulted my Helms manual and came up with a few quick checks prior to me going crazy and tearing into my tranny....
1) Clutch master cylinder:* could this have gone bad? it's been in my car for almost 10 years and i did notice a small bit of fluid leaking out of it from the front rubber boot inside the drivers side cabin.
2) Clutch slave cylinder: * has anyone had any problems with this?
3) Release bearing: * this might be that high pitched whurring sound I am hearing?
4) Clutch and pressure plate:* Maybe it is time to change it? It's an ACT HD clutch and HD pressure plate that I have had in there for about 90,000 miles.. I guess I could change my flywheel also...
Anyone who has had experience with trannies (especially B18C1's) please respond to this thread and let me know what you think . I plan on changing this all myself with my trusty Helms manual at my side.
I plan on re-bleeding my clutch system again just to make sure and see if any air bubbles are trapped in the line somehow and checking out the small stuff like the clutch master cylinder and slave before i even think about cracking my tranny open...
Thanks to all who will input thier experiences..

most likely your clutch... the gear whouldn't engage until like 4 grand right?? if thats the case then your transmission prolly isn't acting funny its your broken clutch
If the clutch master is leaking, that's the first thing to replace. It can cause those symptoms.
Try a rebuild kit -- I imagine there is one available (from a decent parts house) and it's easy to do, unless Honda cylinders are different from the others I have done.

I might just buy a new clutch slave cylinder from Honda...any more suggestions?
Honda MC/SC are not rebuildable VIA rebuild kit because they do not sell them
I am willing to put money that your syncro's are bad.....

Will they just give up and quit like that? All in one day? I have done regular maintenance on my tranny like only putting in Honda MTF for the life of my car, I hope it is not my synchros...
"Transmission acting funny during higher RPM shifting, won't go into gear" i had this same exact problem a month ago and it was the clutch...
my clutch had about 20,000miles and broke without notice... its not like the pedal went to the floor, the actual clutch disc had a piece broken off around the sprung part of the disc, and the clutch chattered from the piece of metal trying to get out through the clutch and pressure plate...
i'd say drop the tranny and take a look because you'll never know if its the clutch if you don't take a look...if its not the clutch open up the tranny and take a gander inside

Any recommendations on clutch fluid? all I have been using is Dot4 brake fluid..can DOT 3 be used?

Honda just uses their regular brake fluid, DOT 3. Not like there's any heat involved.

I got to thinking since I might be taking my tranny apart, anyone have some opinions on Clutch Master versus ACT?
I am thinking about putting in a lightened flywheel (fidanza or ACT streelite) and a new clutch if my clutch is the culprit, I currently have an ACT clutch with HD pressure plate, no problems, but I have heard some good things about CLutchmasters stage 3 clutch...
Any comments from experience?

I <3 my clutchmasters stage 3. The pedal feels the same as stock, and with my weenie stock ls, I can chirp my 195 50 15s in 5th gear. I'd say it grabs ok.
I took the trans off after 15k miles, blew the dust off the flywheel, and everything looked brand new. I have the clutchmasters light flywheel too, and I love it as well. It doesn't chatter, or anything wierd. I like all my stuff to feel like really badass oem.

Well, got all my parts in and I plan to install them all tonight. Hopefully everything turns out ok and I won't have to crack my tranny open...

Installed all new parts and still have the problem of not being able to shift in higher RPM... I think I just might have to buy new clutch setup....
