Sup guys,

I've been having a tapping noise coming from my motor and after discussing about it with a couple friends, we came decided my motor needed a valve adjustment. Two days ago i had my valves adjusted and the tapping became a bit quieter, but then today i noticed the tapping became a bit louder again. I'm not totally sure if its the valves again that are tapping. I record a short clip. If you guys can listening to it and maybe throw out an idea of what it could be. I'de really appreciate it. Sorry for being a bit long to DL. Its like a 15 second clip. TIA

Take a long screw driver & place the tip on the valve cover & put your ear on the handle, if you can clearly hear the tapping then it's from the valves. It may just be the injectors ticking. (I didn't listen to your clip BTW)

 

Any info on why the injectors might be ticking or making a tapping sound? It sounded like it could be from that area...

What do you think it could be? After closer examination... I think it could be the injectors... If it was.. Is there any problems with them ticking that loudly?

Thats not the sound of injectors, its tapping on every cyl fire right? Sounds a little sloshy- you should record to uncompressed digital with a flat-response mic at least 20 inches away from the engine to get a fair hearing.
Something could be out-of-round or bent out-of-shape in that top area, including the distributor shaft. Is it good quality gas you put in there? Did it happen all of a sudden or did it creep up?

 

and rev it up just a little bit in the video. so we can hear how the noise changes as the motor spins up.

I agree, i had the same problem, but i need to hear it when it revs. When i reved my SOHC i had massive rod knock and it was VERY similar to that video clip.

Post a video like he said and give it a couple small revs, if the sound is throughout the rev, and gets louder, you may have a serious problem.....

Wouldnt a bent valve show up in a compression test? I did one when i purchased the car and it came out 210 across the board...

 

yeah...it should show in a compression test. it did for my friends motor when he had a couple of bent valves.

what motor you got?

good idea!!

anyway ... does the noise go away when you press the clutch in? when we swapped a tranny on to a friends car a few months ago, it made the same noise as your motor. it stopped when the clutch was disengaged. turned out that the throwout bearing was on cockeyed.

My motor is a b18c1 and i did a compression test about 1.5 months ago and it came out 210 across the board. Which would mean my valves are fine right?

that would mean ide have to pull out the whole tranny right? Is there any problem if i cant fix it right away? Or should i fix the throw out bearing asap?

i checked with the flat head screwdriver and checked my valve cover for the valves and they were fine. But when i checked the injectors it was making the annoying tapping noise. So it was the injectors all along! So my question is now... Is there anything wrong with ticking injectors? Should i replace them? Or is that normal among b series motors? TIA

The nominal fuel injector function should sound like two fingernails tapping. Your video sounds like a ruler slapping a desk.

 

back from the dead... could the sound be a spun bearing? The thing is.. even with the noise.. there has not been any negative performance from the motor itself.

u sure? cause from my ear, sounds like a slap. as if the timing belt, or another belt is wobbly and hitting something else. you sure your belts and timing belt are good? thats what it sounded like to me. tapping valves usually sounds different. then again, i aint a expert on your motor, i got a d16y7 and i know ITS specific sound.

No still old video... i should prob do a new video... just curious of what it could be... just paranoid

 

that sounds like valve clap...try giving your motor a valve adjustment..they maybe loose...goodluck
