Default Driving on a messed up engine?

Some of you know my delima already but for those that dont here it is.

I had a dent in my oil pan that i got from a friend. now stupid *** me figured ya know, its just a tiny little dent in the corner, it wont do anything. well, that just goes to show what greed, stupidity and impatients will do for you.

as i drove the car the oil light would pop on once in a while but go away right away. i drove the car like this for about 200 miles before pulling the oil pan off to pound out the dent, thinking that was the problem.

when i removed the pan, this is what i saw

this is 200 mile old Mobil 1 Synthetic 5w30, filled with SILVERISH colored shavings. now people that know what they are doing can tell better, but MHO is cylinder wall / piston pieces from scarring due to lack of oil.

if you look at my fingertip you can see a chunk of aluminum. it was about 1mm thick with ridges on the end of one side. my guess is thats a piece of piston.

so the engine is most likely toasted, i am supposed to move across country in one month and i dont have a spare engine. im going to just ship it out to san diego and fix it there, but here lies the question...

how long will an engine with this kind of damage going to last? can i still drive it to and from work or no? i know you cant make a real determination without pulling the engine apart but still. i know some of you had piston and wall scarring and drove on it for a while.

TIA

it is more liekly pieces of your bearings, and if you continue to drive it you may spin a bearing and do damamge to your crank shaft.

i did run a magnet through the oil when i drained it and nothing was picked up. also i was told that bearing shavings are gold, not silver... truth to this?

Time for an F23 bottom end swap?

But really I would not drive much on it. If it is a piston then you might have to sleeve to save the cylinders if you continue driving. The particles will go thoughout your system and get in the bearng sand cam journals and if there are enough particles it can block oil passages (very bad).

Well IIRC bearings contain bronze, but will usually look silver and sometimes bronze. They are magnetic though.

I can guarantee you that a good deal of the shavings are from your bearings.

Assuming you drove it w/ the dent up to the oil pickup tube, and that it is not acting funny or making funny noises yet, it should last for a little while longer. The bearings will probably spin first, so take it very easy on the car and drive it till you can get a new motor in line.

Oh, keep some cash back in case the motor pops before you are ready and you have to tow it home

A compression test will tell you if it is your rings/pistons. My H23 had lots of magnetic particles. so it may just be your pistons. I still recommend against driving it in the mean time.

Doug,

I am not sure how much this will help you out but if no one buys my H23 longblock within the next few weeks, and you need a motor to help you get your car to wherever you are going, you can swap my motor into your car for the time being. Besides, most of the people who have inquired about my motor have been on the west coast or some other part of the country. Once you are done with it, and pull it out, then I can advertise it for sale at that point.

I am in Maryland so we can meet up anyway.

EDIT: Oops, I don't know what I was thinking. I forgot you had a 5th gen Type SH.

Anyway, if it can help you out, let me know.

last engine i ahd built by a machine shop they put the worng bearings in ad we ended up with lots of shavings that looked identical to the ones you have, mostly it was the outer layer of the bearing for us, and i never checked to see if they were magnetic, sicne we pulled the engine right away, had to get all new bearings and either turn the crank or get a new cranks ince it was torn up.
