Default b16a vs. b18b????

ok i have a crx shell right now and its ready for a swap. I have a b18b right now with almost all parts to put in my crx. I am going to be going all motor setup in my crx. Im in a dilema about which motor to put in. Im asking which motor would be better/faster with a all motor setup in my crx??

since you already have an ls, i would just use that. otherwise, i would probably get the b16. but of course, the 1.8l vtec owns

not if you do a ls/vtec or if your not looking to be that fast then build a non-vtec.but ls/vtec will be better then a b16.

Depends on the price your getting both swaps for. Are you buying them complete? What are your power goals?

If you both swaps were the same in price, id go with the b16. You get the b16 head, tranny, and ecu so plans on ls/vtec would be cheaper than, say you went with ls swap.

untrue!

I did a swap in two identical hatches, one had a stock B16A, the other a stock B18b w/ a B16 tranny! The result time after time, after time was the LS pulled hard on the B16 hatch from a dead stop, from a 1 st gear roll, 2nd gear roll, 3rd gear roll, and forth gear roll! We even did a roll B16 HB in 3rd, B18 HB in 4th starting roll and the B18 HB still won, but it was a lot closer!

These tests were done in 2002, both hatches were 92 VX's, 2044lbs.! One was equiped with a 2nd gen B16 swap, and the other was equiped with a 95 B18B w/ a B16 hydro tranny! The only mods on BOTH of these cars was the clutch, flywheel, and intake!

Also for anyone that has been on HT for a awhile, ask Chad Slagg about the time I blew my B16 motor up and he put an LS in my Si HB with my old B16 Tranny(stock), and ran it against one of the EK Hatches that he did a B16 swap in w/ mods! Results were the same! B18 Hatch over B16 hatch! This was in 2001

You can be fast with a nonvtec! Ask Allmotornonvtec or LSiTurbo about their 12.11 1/4 mile nonvtec B20 allmotor crx! Talk to sure guys with turbo LS's and B20's!

I agree! If you want to go Ls/Vtec then then buy the B16 motor swap, so you already have the Head and tranny; and then you can pick up a complete B18A/B block for $100 or a B20 block for $350

You have a point, b/c I never tore these motors apart! However there were no pings or knocks in the motors and they had not blown up by the time they are built!

All I am proving is that this test was done numerous time, and my experience in the matter is the B18b out did the B16 stock for stock!

Take a look at it like this! most B16's only put down 135 whp and about 100ft-lbs of torque stock and the B18b only 125-130 whp and aout 115-120 ft-lbs. of torque!

I SAY .... if it's built right one can be just as fast as the other , however , ls/vtec is deff. the way to go because you get the best of both worlds ,

i have a 94 b18b decently modded in a 95 eg with ful interior (now) and i can hang with the best of em' the good thing about the b18b is you get power from the start , hense you don't have to wait for vtec to kick in to start pulling , but b16 revs high and once you hit vtec (if built right ) will pull really hard , but stock vs. stock , b18b in a hatch will win every time ,

I have a rebuilt b18a1 with 11.5 comp, with port and polished head, I/h/e, and I have left a lot of b16's, with similar mods, I mean 1st gear is crazy.

Yes it is!
Especially with a B16 tranny, 1st and 2nd are gone through quick!

you can do the best of both worlds...ls block w b16 head...but theres a LOT more than just slapping the head on there...and i mean a lot...that test w the b16 and ls motor...it really comes down to the driver...an ls motor will never beat a b16 in the top end, but once again it comes down to the driver

and if a b16 goes 160hp to the crank and 135whp, how can a ls go 140hp to the crank and 125-130 whp...doesnt make sense...

The LS is faster then the B16 because it has more torque. Alot more torque

My first CRX had a B18B with I/H/E and ran 14.2 @ 97 and went on from there to where I'm at now.

b16 higher top end ??? maybe the speedo reads higher, but alot my friends have b16's and i walk them all the way out ! i agree that driver does have alot to do with it , but not everything , it's more about how you utilize the power of your motor , if you throw a bunch of the wrong bolt on' on you car . you will not make the power you want and will get spanked all the time , but if you do your research or have exp. building motors , you can spend a couple hundered on bolts on and waste the guy who's got $3,000 worth of build , simply because he didn't do the right setup ....
further : i have a b18b in a hatch , and i have raced many guys with diff. setup's and the end result is always me pulling them simply because my setup , works the best for my power plant and i didn't buy every cool new part on the market for bragging rights ! so in conclusion , any motor if built right will out perform another , but there will always be one out there that is bigger and badder , thats why it's called racing and not winning !!!!

Yes driver has a lot to do with it! Me and my buddies however both can drive! You are missing the picture here! The B18B has a lot more torque, and the B16 doesnt make power til vtec kicks in! So out of the hole you have already been smoked while you are waiting for vtec to kick in! Topend roll starts as well the b16 isnt a fast accellerating car from 70-120mph! This is all where torque becomes a playing factor into the equation! You also have to remember that both cars had a B16 trannies!

Also about the B16 only making 135 whp, this just a typical perception b/c the B16 comes with 158 hp at the crank stock! So like most most stock baseline dynos the range anywhere from 130-135 whp! And the B18B comes stock 142 hp at the crank and usually puts down between 120-130 whp! I dont know why it is a different percentage of power loss but that is the just way it is! Do some research and come back and talk me!
