Default just bought an 89 civic HB.

what are some of the best yet uncostly mods i can do. i realize an engine swap would be in my best intrest due to the tiny 1.5 engine. i work at a salvage yard so engines arent hard to get , but which one should i get. theres an accord with a 2.0 and a prelude with the 2.05. i guess my question is which one would be easiest to swap into my civic. keep in mind the only things ive ever worked on are american classics. i own an 81 monte carlo with 4 years invested and i wanted to try this whole import thing! also if anyone needs anyhting i can get it just ask!

Ok, you want to read a lot about swapping motors in your hatch through the search functions, and through the reference section at the website http://www.hondaswap.com. For future reference the accord motor will not fit and neither will the prelude. If you want ease, look for a motor out of 90-00 Civic EX as this is a straight bolt-on. I'll add more later

size isn't really an issue... some of honda's most powerful engines are 1.8 liter. As accord and prelude engines go theyt will not fit into the hatch's without serious modification of the engine bay and crossmembers.

Since you work at a salvage yard you should look into your USDM options. If you're looking for low cost you may want to consider a D16Z6 swap. These motors came out of 93-95 Civic/Del Sol Si's. It's basically similar to your engine (SOHC, 0.1 bigger) but with VTEC and more geared towards performance. Full fuel injection and a throttle body that actually opens to full. This will give you a huge boost in performance over the partially carbourated 1.5 you have in there right now.

Another newer option is the 96-00 Civic EX engine called the D16Y8. Basically the same concept as the D16Z6 (both SOHC 1.6 VTEC) but out of the newer cars. There's various other differences but generally the Y8 is preferred.

Engine mods on the USDM D15B1 and 2's are reletively useless do to the bad cams and intake manifold. Good for gas milage, but they're not going to get you anywhere fast.

Another good USDM engine (and a simpler swap) is the D16A6 which came out of the 88-91 CRX/Civic Si's. This will be a direct bolt in minus the wiring for the fuel injectors and the installation of a resistor box for the OBD0 injectors that you would have to do for the Z6 and Y8's anyway. This is a non-VTEC engine, however, and is less powerful. You should be able to find this one for a lot cheaper than a Z6 or Y8, though.

The options are endless, as are the ways to do so. Your best bet is to look around at what other people have done, find something you like, then search for it using the search feature built into this forum.

i have an acura integra 1.8 here in the yard. its an automatic car. will this motor bolt up to my trans or do i have to get a specific trans? if so will my CV shafts work or do i have to get different ones as well? the engine is a b18b1. is this a good engine? please let me know with any info about what i should do. would it be smart to save the original harness from the acura and will i be able to use the ecm from the integra?

Convert to manual while you're doing the swap.

yea manual conversion on these cars is surprisingly easy

http://hometown.aol.com/jrmupzaii/auto2man.html

def worth it... honda auto tranny is gimped

As for the engine from the Acura, you need special motor mounts for this application. It's a very good engine and has great torque. That engine is a B-Series engine, which can go into the 88-91 civics, but you need a mount kit from some company. I recommend:

HASport

They'll have the awnsers to all your B-Series into 88-91 civic questions. As for using the automatic transmission, that's kind of unexplored territory. 99% of people here run 5spd cable tranny. I don't see why it's not very possible, but I do think it's worth just getting 5spd manual.

You will need different mounts according to the engines series, IE D/zc series, B series, F/H series. The B18a/b is the what come in the lowest end model integras, But is 10x better the anything you would find in the lowest model civics of any sort. Is a perfect motor for your HB if you ask me. Its not gonna have the Glory of Vtec like you here so many honda people talking about. once you understand the dynamics of a honda engine Vtec and otherwise you will see its not very important. The B18's have a nice stroke creating good amounts of TQ for that lil Bitch, The TQ will definetly help keep its *** going. I think this or a ZC swap would be best for you. Being that you should try and keep the wiring simple. Your not going to find a ZC and your yard though inless you get cars wiith swaps done. The engine was only found in japan origanly, but can be had for maybe 350 bucks from a decent shop. I would go for the B18 though if you have acces to one.

The trany will have to be a B series tranny if you use The b18a/b, if its a D series engine it needs a D series tranny.

get an 92-95 civic ex/si motor, use your tranny, or a 90-01 civic si/crx si tranny. then do a obd-1 swap and you got 130hp w/ vteak y0!

no you need a B series transmission to work with that b18. the ecu wont work becuase it is an auto ecu and you need a 5 speed ecu. And i dont know about the harness you can probably use your stocked one because that engine is not Vtec but you will probably have to convert the harness from Dpfi to Mpfi

must use b-series transmission...hey i gotta better idea...look at these sites, i made 'em but i ripped 'em from a book (which i give credit to so you can kiss my *** if you wanna sue Aaron Bonk)
http://www.geocities.com/guita....html
---------------------------------------------/b_series_swap2.html
---------------------------------------------/b_series_swap3.html
---------------------------------------------you get the picture...all the way up to five i think...couple of things i'll have to do to finish whole swap, but i'm workin' on it
check 'em out and you'll see what you're in for for the b_series swap. Also to you seasoned veterans check these out and make sure they're good so far, cuz if their not, i'm not gonna tell newbies to check them out.

that would be a good choice if u went w/ a manual trans. this would have way more power than your current setup. but the b 18 c is a better choice if you have the pesos offering even more power

Your best bet and easiest swap into that civic is the B18a. I'm assuming you have the Dx or Std model civic since you said you have a 1.5 in the car, but still the easiest swap will be the from a 90-91 integra the wiring is the same as the 88-91 Si model Civic/CRX and you will also need to swap out your hubs with an Si model.
