Default no power

hey,

i have an 89 DX hatch that does not accelerate when i floor it... the gas pedal is all the way down but the engine revs very, very slowly... any idea what is wrong? is this a problem related to the tranny or the engine? other? oh, the engine is a d15b2...

thanks.

manual.

most noticeably when i downshift to 2nd after making a turn, it seems like im in too high of a gear and it slowly accelerates.

in neutral when i floor it, it revs slower than it normally should.

when i floor it in first, it's slow... and yes, i know it is a DX and they are slow, but it's a LOT slower than it should be.

i know for sure that my auto 90 dx hatch could smoke my manual 89 dx

sounds like you could be running super rich. or your plugs or wires are bad. check it out. and you beat me to saying that the problem is that its a dx (cause they ARE slow)

check your air filter before you get too far into diagnosing.

use fuel injector cleaner,

check your tps, and map sensors

do a major tune up if you haven't for a while

basically take care of the basics first.

The first thing id do would be to take off the cat and make sure its not clogged. A clogged cat would do that. Take it out and see it you can see through it...its best if you put one end up to a light and look through the other end. If it looks clogged then just spray some brake cleaner in it...or you could just take the handle of a hammer and break all the ceramic **** out

Actually...id prolly check the cap/rotor, wires, and plugs first...in that order.

checking vacuum is a sure fire way to tell if you have an exhaust restriction.

well, oil was leaking into the cylinders, clogged up my spark plugs. i put new ones in and the power returned... but oil is still burning.

blown piston rings? how much to fix them?

Yo bro, had a similar problem, most likely its your plugs and wires. You could also check the timing belt that could be another possibility

yeah, the lack of power was from the spark plugs that were drenched in oil.

i doubt its the head gasket... might be piston rings, how much to fix them?

Sounds like it might be time for a complete rebuild or mabye time to look for a replacement engine... the 1.5's go pretty cheap for a good running one that some one yanked for a swap... Good luck with your project. .

The rings them selves are not really that expensive. but you will need to have the cylinders bored out and once you are in there there are alot more things that prob. need replaced... Its up to you . but if I was tearing down that far I would go for the whole rebuild. or for about hte dame money you could swap a stronger d engine in it and pick up a few horses at the same time

You're causing the technical side of my brain severe trauma this early in the morning. The DX Transmission is not "long" as you put it, it just has a lower final drive then say an SI. Funny though, I don't remember mine having four gears for the two years I was driving mine, it must have been a phantom fifth. The D15B2 doesn't have 96hp at the flywheel, hell, it was lucky to have 92hp when it came new off the factory lot. 15 odd years later it might be lucky to have a number in the upper 80's. We dynoed my B2 for ***** and giggles with leaking valve seals and we managed 77whp. For your information, a SOHC ZC of the type that is referred to around here (Fuel injected OBD-0 motor) is the same for the D16A6 internally except for a minor change on the exhaust side of the camshaft. Doing this swap will get him into the "triple digits" but what would that help? Hell, putting the SI transmission in will allow him to have a nice pull for the motor.

Anyways, if it is still burning oil, have you done a compression check? If you can narrow done some numbers, I'll put my money on valve seals any day of the weak.
