After getting my first warning today about an hour ago and last night my friend and i were on our way to his girls goin about 120 down a street then having a cop going in the same coldesac as us 1 minute later im starting to wonder if i should get one. I can never see these cops either, i have tunnel vision or something. I need to slow it down too, i know i know, i am........i just a little gas happy. But let me know whats the best one to get. What, you can't do a search? If you did, you'd turn up topics like...

https://honda-tech.com/zerothread?id=87474
https://honda-tech.com/zerothread?id=55878
https://honda-tech.com/zerothread?id=45833

Remember, the search function is your friend. And you don't want to forget your friends, especially around the holidays.

i have the bel 980 series and it works like a champ....the new passport is suppost to be awesome too.....in cali do they use radar or laser more?......if they use laser alot your screwed either way....the detectors go off when the laser already has you....i think you have like 3/10 of a second to react when it goes off with laser....but with radar it will detect it around 1/2 mile away...giving you enough time to slow down

Anyone in Va use radars? They are illegal and wanted to know if the cops really care.

Check law for VA, I don't think they are illegal there anymore. Doesn't hurt to check

Go to http://www.speedzones.com for radar detector info. That's all that needs to be said.

I would look into that new Uniden with the GPS. Tons of features, and a price of $220. Sounds good to me.

I think you're thinking of Connecticut, where they used to be illegal but they legalized them a couple of years ago. AFAIK they are still illegal in VA, DC, and Canada.

YEAH! I had the BEL 980 earlier this year. I drove from SF to Albz, NM and it sniffed out EVERY cop that used radars. They say one of the good things about the 980 is that it has very good detection over hills. I'll buy it again when I make my way back to Ablz.

They're not really "illegal". You just have to pay a little $50 fine if you get caught using one. No big deal. Cops do look for them though. I've been busted once for it. Cop saw it on the dash as I merged onto the highway

V1 or don't speed. The advantage, it shows you where the bogeys are. Bogey, twelve o'clock!

V1 or Escort. Other than that don't speed.

Every notice where the local "test bed" was?

If you go to http://www.speedzones.com you'll see that they have a new radar gun out that no radar detectors are able to detect. So all of you praising your precious little V1, it won't protect you at all. Nor will any other detectors for that matter.

The Uniden GPS model is cute, but I demo tested it and it sucks.

My personal recomendation is the Escort 8500. Cheaper than a V1 and in my opinion better.

But of course all the V1 fanatics will point out that the V1 has arrows...

However, if you want the ultimate protection check this bad mo' fo' out, new from Escort: http://www.escortradar.com/srx.htm (it's concealed, and gives ultimate protection)

As suggested by nsxtcjr search for previous posts; we have beat the hell out of this topic already.

My friends call my Radar Detector a "Ticket Detector" because when it goes off, BEEP BEEP BEEP, congratulations, you got a ticket!!

But seriously, even though my radar detector has saved me countless times, I have also gotten 3 tickets with it, in 2 years. The first was doing 85mph on the interstate, and a cop was heading towards me at probably equal or greator speed. I was listening to my Korn CD pretty loud and wasn't paying attention, so maybe I just didn't hear the early warning beeps, but either way, by the time I noticed, he was already in my rear view mirror, smoke blazing from his tires as he skid down the highway and across the median to turn around. For the second ticket, the cop was hiding behind a building and I actually looked over as I passed him, he had a hand-held, and I guess turned it on as I passed because it went from dead silent, to full-blast beeping when he pointed it at me out his window. He even bragged to me that there was nothing my radar detector could do if he waited until I was right there to turn his gun on. And thirdly, I was in some extremely hilly terrain and I was just about to crest a very steep hill and a trooper came shooting over the top, again, little warning, but not enough warning. I think he too may have activated his gun when he saw me and I wasn't able to slow in time. In 2 of the 3 cases, I was able to slow enough that my ticket wasn't quite as high as it could have been, but still got tickets.

So in other words, there's plenty of situations when the Ticket Detector will do just that, inform you of your pending ticket to come. I have the highest model Escort makes. My friend has the Valentine One and has also been ticketed. It's just a matter of situation. Plus, it makes you more cocky, because you feel safe.

as far as good ones, valentine is a OK detector now, they havent updated their technologies which means other companys have beat them out in most areas of detection ... and 399 is too expensive. you can get a nice escort 8500 for 250 or so now.
Hey troll, you're wrong. They have been continuously improving their technology, they offer upgrades for your units at minimal cost. Just because they've been using the same shell for years doesn't mean they are the same.

Lets see, Mike Valentine used to work for Cincinnati Microwave. He set up his place about 5 miles from original CM factory. Then CM went belly up and was bought my locals and now in West Chester, about 1.5 miles off I-75.

Cincinnati is a killer test bed for radar detectors.

Escort and Valentine already have the new radar covered.
Will be in production soon.

Actually sackdz, I don't believe Valentine has offered an update in a long time. The hardware is also still old. They are releasing the V2 soon, but I hear the only big change is the size (smaller of course).

I don't use a radar detector personally; not because of money, or theft fears; I honestly find I am better off speeding without a detector because I am more alert. The best investment I ever made was a police scanner from Uniden that detects police whether they have their radar on or not.

Better watch recommending scanners. In Ohio, for instance, carrying a police scanner in your car is illegal. A CB, however, can be beneficial, and is legal. It performs basically the same function so it's a better alternative IMO.

Personally, after having a Valentine 1 for over a year...I can't imagine buying anything else. Being able to tell where they are, and how many there are, is worth 400 bucks by itself.

It's also very sensitive. I travel to track events with a group a lot of the time, and we all have CB radios in the cars so we can talk. Invariably, I'll be the first to yell "radar! radar!" over the CB if I'm the only one with a V1.

One thing that I didn't see mentioned is customer support. I've had my V1 for a while now. I called the company - the day before Christmas - to ask about hard-wiring the thing into my Suburban. They spent a lot of time on the phone with me and eventually solved the problem. Customer service =

These other features the ones on Speedzone have...I guess that stuff's OK, but I wanted a radar detector. When I decide to get a GPS thing or a thermometer, I'll get one. I can tell what the weather is by looking out the window.

Just my opinion.

For what it's worth, the Feb issue of Car and Driver has a radar detector test, so that may be something to check out. A lot of the cops here in Tempe use laser now, so I don't even bother to carry my detector anymore. I pretty much just use it for trips to Tucson and back (~100mi or so).
