Default oil burn

Guys yet another question....

I've been told all ITRs stock burn oil depending on how u drive it of course. If your constantly in VTEC u will have to add about a quart every 1000 miles or so. Is there a way to fix this? ? ? Yes I searched and didn't come up with quite what I was looking for.

If I replace my piston rings will this help the problem? I suppose I could check the compression ratio and see if my valves are closing all the way during combustion.....suggestions appreciated.

How do u guys find ur Rs on oil?

Define "constantly in VTEC... you will have to add a quart every 200 miles at HPDE, that almost qualifies as "constant VTEC".

15w50 helps. Non-synth seems to help. Mobil1 5w30 seems to be the consensus worst burner, but I didn't really have much problem with it myself (50K miles).

YMMV

At the track, syn will burn. I go through a quart for every 150 miles. On the street, I go through one quart between oil changes. Synthetic seems to burn. I doubt there is a fix for this, just our high revving motors.

You can't really get around it. Try using non synthetic oil, it won't burn as fast. But generally, if your having fun in your R...... your gonna burn alot of oil.

The stock cooler has been completely fine for me. Through 3 years of w2w racing with it, I've had no cooling problems even in 110+ degree track temps.

Have you tried Amsoil synthetic? I used to swear by Mobil 1 10w-30, and would burn approximately .5 qts at the track. After switching to Amsoil, I burn none. It's great stuff. FYI, I get it from Phil at philstireservice.com. He's a great guy as well as a racer (with a built B18) and is more than willing to help with any questions you might have.

I'll give Amsoil a shot. It's good (well, not good) to know that some of my fellow R owners have the same problem. I'd love to try not to use VTEC for the period inbetween oil changes and see if I burn any. So there is no way to completely fix this problem? ok thanks again guys.

look into oils that are not energy concerving and higher HTHS, they'll stay more stable.. we had several good discussions previously on this topic with lots of useful information.. its unlikely for problem to go away from just switching to thicker oil.. do you see smoke while driving? do you see smoke when letting off throttle (that could mean valve seals). a small oil leak could make the car loose oil in between oil change intervals. you gotta narrow down the cause.. do a compression test, leakdown.. get more information

I've been told on the highway if when I drop a gear and kick the revs up there is a puff of smoke. when I start it, its fine. Maybe i have a small leak in one of my cylinders....I will do a compression test and find out.
