Default JDM Front End

We'll eventually I wan't to do a JDM front end conversion on my Integra. I was reading up on it and heard that it's not DOT leagl? What does DOT legal mean? Also, are there any saftey issues with having a JDM front end? Thanks.

Btw, I tried to search again but the search function is down right now.

DOT = Department of Transportation. The JDM front is not DOT legal because its the DOT rules apply to USDM cars and not to JDM cars (Japan probably has their own automobile laws), so the JDM front doesn't meet all the specifications DOT requires. The only other safety issue I've seen is the bumper support- the JDM bumper support looks like a toothpick compared to the USDM one. Some people have still used the USDM one with the JDM front though, but it requires slight modification (sanding of corners and foam I believe)

Thanks. Having a thinner bumper support means that if you get in to an accident at a lower speed like 5mph your front end is really gonna get messed up right? What about at higher speeds, is it more dangerous than the USDM one.

don't worry about it. Whos gonna know? I think the other thing that makes it not dot legal is the headlights. And if you get into a front end accident chances are ur gonna mess things up pretty good wether u have the usdm or jdm support.

what i said was F it and put it on

i think all USDM headlights have to have the DOT then a number in order to be legal but cops arent going to get the magnifying glasses out and check if your lights are DOT legal.

I have the JDM Conversion on my DC2. I don't care if its not legal, cops don't really pay attention. I'm more scared of getting into an accident and having the engine sit on my lap.

see for yourself:

USDM:

vs.
JDM:

personally, i'd rather go with the USDM, the JDM is almost like not having anything at all..

Thanks for the info, but at a higher speed crash would it be more dangerous if you got into an accident?

At a high speed crash, it doesn't matter. Whole front clip will be destroyed either way. But for a low speed crash, the difference is great. I decided to have the best of both worlds.... http://home.comcast.net/~hbkshow/103_0334a.jpg

haHa.. yeah, i was the one that chopped this a few days ago..

here is the one i did right before i used JDM fenders and hood:

and also, i realize that the JDM hood may not actually look like this, because you can still see the USDM 'humps', but it wouldn't have looked as clean because if i took out the reflections of the trees, it would have looked like ***:

oh well.. haha.. its a trip to look at tho..

Cool man, is it hard to do make it fit with the USDM bumper support? Looks like I'm gonna go JDM front end.

yeah it's not bad at all. Cut a couple spots on bumper where the plastic is black, no big deal. I ended up painting my bumper support black, so you can't even tell it's back there.

Japan is really lenient for many laws such as from what i hear about the support it wont pass a 5 mile per hr accident. Also, i have heard some cops are very strict and some even have a book of violations for the JDM front end conversion, dont know exactly what they include but i believe one is no bottom fogs. Don't know all this stuff for sure but just hear things occassionally on H-T.

And the 1st photoshopped car kinda reminds me of a Prelude the 92-96 ones or what ever the year was, just with a funny lookin hood.
