Alternator Questions (search is down)
I looked all over the internet and couldn't find any help with this. I am trying to replace my alternator and have it off the hinges and everythign is going fine until I try to get it off. I took off and drained the oil filter/oil and it gets caught on the axle. Do I have to take that damn axle off too??? If so how do I do this and can it be done in my garage w/limited man/brain power? Thanks
you can do it but you have to manuver it around a bit. you dont have to remove the axle to do it. i think i took it out the bottom. you might be able to snake it thru from the top. i cant remember for sure but i know it can be done without removing the axle or anything major
omg, I cannot believe you actually got it disconnected without the axel being off... I need a better alt before too long... But there is like no way I can see to get in there without taking everything off.... How did you do that? small hands and arms?
The bracket that holds the alternator can be taken off from the bottom and that is one way you can get if off and you can snake it to the side and get it out w/out taking the axle off. It is 14mm and probably takes 400,000lbs of pressure b/c I sure as **** couldn't do it and I am by no means a small man... I'm thinking I will PB Blast it and see if that helps, if not it is going to a body shop.
hrm, well being the alt, this might not work like brakes and other stuff... but if you could take a small and concentrated torch to the bolts that hold it, it may relax it enough, and fry the rust enough, that you might be able to break it loose. But with all the stuff in there, and limited space, I dont know if it would work.
