Default 96 Civic getting hard to shift, what's wrong ?

Hi all,
I own a 96 Civic hatchback with 120K miles and a manual transmission. Lately it will occasionally be difficult to engage the gears, and I need to pup the clutch several times and have to push the stick more than normal. So I assume that there's something wrong with the clutch. My questions are:
1) What specifically could be wrong with the clutch ?
2) At how many miles is the clutch to be serviced ?
3) Can anyone recommend a shop in Southern California with good Honda mechanics that can repair this ?

If it's the original clutch with 120k on it, you've probably been extremely lucky you haven't had to replace it sooner
