.....Have a basic brake pad question. I am going to replace the rotors and pads on our 97 EX Civic 77k miles. It appears the pads were replaced once. They are Nissin pads without shims. The Helm manual shoes shims. My new pad set is also Nissin standard pads that came without shims. Does anyone know I should add shims or should brake squeek/grease on the pad backs and clips enough ?

yes you NEED the shims..i just recently replaced my brake pads and didnt put the shims on and everytime i backed up and hit my brakes a loud squeeking noise will occur and its annoying..them i went to Honda and bought some shims and now the squeeking went away

 

Seattle area Honda dealers sell pad/shim sets only. Anyone know where I can get just the shims ?

The pad set you got probably is a generic, that expects you to reuse the shims. Don't know if they are sold seperately.
