Default HELP! Please, Valves are ticking loud as f*!k after adjustments.

Well after putting in my new set of cams, my valves are supposed to be set to .006 int. and .008 exh. So I finally found a friend w/the snap-on tool to adjust my valves. I checked in Helms and noticed that the intake side are already set at .006 stock and it was cool when I checked them ( so I decided to adjust all of the exhaust side only ). The stock are supposed to be .007 and now it needs to be .008 and that's what I did. Though it was my first time adjusting valves and I don't know if I set them too loose; too tight; or did I go wrong with just adjusting the exh. side.......to make it tick so loud. It's worst than when I didn't adjust the valves after the new cams were in. Now to the proper adjustments (I think) it's ticking so dang loud! I'm really thinking the valves are too loose, but for you pro's please let me know exactly what is wrong. Thanks.

Sounds like you're running them too loose try again. Adjusting valves is a little bit of trial and error until you get the hang of it. Just keep at it you'll get it down.

I just hate having to waste hondabond on my valve cover gasket and keep on taking the thing off. When do I know when it's right? Is it when it makes no more ticking sounds? I'm not sure if I'm even doing it right after hearing the damn valves tick so dang loud (it wasn't that loud before I messed w/ it). Also, is it alright to adjust just one side? Such as the exhaust, and leave the intake side; since the intake is believed to already being .006.

Thanks.

You shouldnt need the honda bond if you are running the appropriate valve cover gasket. Also, if you are questioning whether or not you are doing it right....Buy a manual. Dont just leave one side alone...You are there....get it done.....do BOTH!

Here is a bit of advice i saved on my computer from a hybrid board memeber. I found this very, very helpful when doing my valve adjustments. ALSO: You slhouldnt need hondabond on your valvecover. I must have taken mine off 20 times and used the same gasket without a single leak. Just be sure to wipe all contact surfaces with brake cleaner. OK, on to the god stuff:::

Before I learned this method I was pretty shitty at valve adjustments, it would take me about 2 hours to get it right, having to redo all of at least twice. But since, its pretty much right every time-and only takes like 45min-Hour.

First you need the right tool -- do you?
Depending on what clearances you are going for, start out with the biggest size: Lets say you're doing .006-.007 - Start out with the .007, loosen the adjuster screw and insert the .007 then tighten it all the way until it won't come out, then loosen it until you can JUST pull it out. Then put the .006 in and start tightening until you can feel a slight tug. Then hold the adjustment screw in place (with whatever tool your using i.e., snap-on) and tighten the nut.

When you do it this way, since the .007 won't come out, then you know the clearance can't be too loose - and then you can play with until there is slight tug on the .006. And you know the clearance is not too tight since the .006 can be inserted.

Also, be sure not to angle the tool when you pull it out, try pulling out at as straight as an angle is possible - and it also takes patience, sometimes when you tighten the nut it will move the adjustment screw also - and tighten the clearance in the process.

Always double check with the .006 after you've tightened the nut down.

Ok, thats it--try, try again. You'll get it!!!

You are making your adjustments on each cylinder WHILE it is on TDC on the compression stroke, right? ALSO, when you change any cam, it will not necesarily have the same base circle diameter. Meaning that just because the old cam was set at .007 when you removed it and the new cam is supposed to be also set at .007, that you will automatically have the .007 after the installation. You MUST re-check it. It is a function of the base circle measurement. If it .005 smaller, your clearance before adjusting would be .012. If it is .009 larger, you would have no clearance and actually holding the valves open.

Hey THANKS alot 93LSIVIC and earl, your method and calculations helped out alot. They are still ticking, but really low volume. Well that's the best I can do. Thanks you guys.

They will tick anyway. Honda is known for having somewhat loud valves. Also you might be confusing the noise with the injectors, they are damn loud too! Glad to see that everything worked out for you. Merry Christmas
