Default swap help

i've got a 91 crx si and im lookin to swap a d16y8 into it. the d16 came out of a 98 civic ex. it is a full swap. what i want to know is what motor mount kit i need to get? and i was wondering do i need to do a tranny kit? is the d16y8 a hydro or cable clutch? if so do i need to do a conversion like hydro to cable? all im missin is the ecu and i can just go get that from the junkyard. also do i need to get a new wiring harness? the crx already has one but do i need to do some sort of conversion like obd0 to obd2? if you guys could help me out with anything else i might need.

thanks

This is my pathetic attempt to help someone with a D series swap:

Keep your transmission, it will bolt up and let you keep the cable clutch. I would also keep the OBD0 ecu, and give it the one wire vtec treatment, but if you're just getting into this stuff, that can be harder. You can put in the engine harness from the OBD2 car, and run an OBD2 ecu, but with so many people converting to OBD1, seems like a bad idea. Your best bet might be to convert to OBD1 and start changing connectors to plug up to the motor.

Disclaimer: My advice probably sucks, and someone else who knows more about D series and OBD1 and OBD2 probably has a better idea. They should post it and not make fun of me because I'm stuck in OBD0 Land.

You mentioned a junk yard, where are some good places around Concord?

Use your stock tranny - so far so good drdisco69. The EX tranny is hydro and your car uses a clutch cable.

Using OBD0 with VTEC doesn't get the full potential. I would suggest getting a OBD0-OBD1 conversion harness and splicing in the wires for the VTEC selanoid, and use the OBD1 VTEC computer (P28 I think?). Just as much trouble as doing OBD0-OBD2, but there is a lot more computer programs for the OBD1 SOHC VTEC computer. I don't know what to do about the injectors though. I know the OBD0 and OBD2 injectors are different, but I don't know if you can just bypass the resistor box or what? I don't know if OBD1 and OBD2 injectors are the same either. Might want to do some research on that

If your clutch looks bad at all, replace it. No questions. Replace it while you have everything apart instead of having to pull it all out again.

BTW, use your 91 clutch/flywheel. I think you'd be ok with the EX flywheel, but I'd just use the 91 just to be safe.

whatever tranny you decide to use make sure you use the clutch from the same year. as long as it is d series it will all bolt up ok no fabrication necessary. and for the injectors you can either wire up the ones in the motor to obd-1 or just keep the ones out of your old motor and keep them obd 0 im pretty sure they will still work with the resistor box and obd 1 my friend ran his gsr like that for a while.

<TABLE WIDTH="90%" CELLSPACING=0 CELLPADDING=0 ALIGN=CENTER><TR><TD>Quote &raquo;</TD></TR><TR><TD CLASS="quote">so ur sayin pull the 98 clutch and replace it with a 91 crx si clutch and use the 91 flywheel. will the 91 clutch fit into the 98 housing with ease or would i need to fabricate a lil</TD></TR></TABLE>

I used to have an L3 info link, but I lost it. The spline count is the same from 89-up and I think the clutch area is the same for those years too. If so, you could use the 98 flywheel with the 91 clutch, but just to be safe put the 91 on there. No fabbing necessary, they're both D series.

I didn't know you could use OBD0 injectors with an OBD1 computer. Even if you still use the resistor box...

The obd1 way.
--change the engine motor mount bracket from the old engine to new engine.
--use your stock motor mounts
--si tranny is recommended.
-- convert from dpfi to mpfi if your car is a dx,
--obd0-obd1 conversion harness.( http://www.jkobdconversionharness.com/ )
--obd1 distributor
--use the obd2 injectors that came with the d16y8 engine.
--cut the silver resistor box and solder the wires since you are using obd2 injectors(compatable with obd1).
--use the clutch and flywheel from your old engine to your new one, might want to get a new clutch.
--the crankangle fluctuation sensor is left unpluged when you install.
--get a 4 wire o2 sensor
--thats all i can think of

Well I just finished doing one of these swaps. Kinda getto on the drivers mount and other **** but it still worked out.
THINGS TO KEEP:
-tranny
-axles
-shifter
-wiring
-tranny mount and rear mount (you can do the front one is an option)
-I used the drivers mount from a 92-95 dx civic 2 bolt and I had to cut the lip on the bottom and welded the freeking thing in but it worked out good.
-injectors
-air intake temp sensor
Thats about all that I can think of everything else leave to the side.
you and use the stock fly and clutch off the 98 (but not on a 88crx tranny)
put the motor in and get all the bottom **** done (axles and crap)
get the wiring in and make shure that you extend the tps wires.

Mark all the plugs before you unplug wires. You are going to have a fan switch that will not have anywhere for you to plug into all that I did was make a jumper or you can butt them together. What it will do is make the fan run when you turn the key on. Once you have all the plugs in then get the air temp sensor and plug it into the plug that you are going to have has an extra towards the alternator. You will not have a place for it if you use the 98 intake but thats ok it will just run your motor with a bit more fuel.
You will have an extra two pin connector under the intake you wont need it.

Put your vacuums in place, do not for get (like I did) the IAC plug wires are blk/yel and a blu/yel.
Check to see if your 98 TB has a sensor on the bottom if it does you may not be able to use it. You might have to get one from a 92-95 civic or better yet a 94 and up integra.
Use a 88-89 integra ECU for better maps or leave the CRX si one in there.
Hook up a MSD RPM activated switch for the Vtec and that should cover it.
Let me know if you have any questions.. Getto or not it will go in there.. runs good too It beats a b16 delsol that ran a 15.06 by a car lenth.....

Use your stock radiator. If you're running OBD1 or OBD2, use the Y8 IM... Its probably the best anyways.
