Default how do you really know?

okay with all the hype about "stolen" type R parts...engines or what ever...how can i find out if my engine is truly legit.....i purchased a bottom end and a tranny from a friend...who got in an EK hatch....it was already installed i the EK when he purchased the car....and it was purchased from out of state, he was told that everything was legit but i haven't seen any paper work myself to prove it.......now....what i wanna know for SURE is that my motor is legit...it is a US spec R motor..it still has the vins and all on it, is there a registry that i can access to check my numbers against or some way to find out what number R my swap comes from...cause even though the R is dead its heart still beats in my hatch. . I don't wanna have anything "stolen" in my car....i know that i didn't steal anything myself but i would suck if it was someone elses miss fortune and i would hate if it was stolen from me so i just wanna be sure all is well that ends well.

any help is appreciated thanks

if you run a carfax, it should come up. i would say call the dmv but if you have a stolen part, i doubt they would just let you off the phone

Sure it works its a VIN #....it will be in the system regardless. So are you saying that the VIN plate is still in tact on the block?

Just bring your car to the local police and ask them to run the #s, I'm sure they will help

The vin has no connection to the ITR number. If you find out where the R was sold originally you could maybe check with that dealer. Its possible they'd have a record of that although its a long shot.

You have to use the carfax service with payment to see the whole history of the vehicle.

this depends if you want to in fact keep it still if it is stolen... if you dont, sure takeit to the police, but if you do, run the vins over the internet

I wonder what would happen if it were stolen, and you did contact the police. If you had documentation showing you paid for it, and the insurance company had already paid out a settlement. The insurance company isn't really out because they have jacked everyones rates up to compensate for the loss.

lol well i guess that is one way to look at it...really i don't believe that it is stolen... So far i haven't gotten any bad results in my quest....i can document that i paid for it and so can the purchaser before myself...... it would be nice to know which R specifically this swap is from....just so i can know what R still lives

100% agreed. use carfax first, then if you in fact feel guilty, then call the police to pick it up. ide do that just becuase i would hate knowing that i had a stolen motor. i hate thieves.

I would never do that. They will seize it if they believe it's stolen. You will have to bring them donuts if you want them to do anything for free anyways.

Ok so you'd like to know, but do you really want to know? Say you found out it was stolen, are you willing to give it back to the rightful owner and be out of pocket for it? I realise it must be sickening for people who get cars or motors stolen but in your position, what you dont know cant hurt you!

true.....but if it was stolen from you would you like to know.....especially if you were already paid off by an insurance company and driving around in your "newer" type R or what ever you moved on too......I would really just like to know for my own peice of mind.....and so i can show up at HT meets and not get the "oh he must have stolen that" look from true R owners....

<TABLE WIDTH="90%" CELLSPACING=0 CELLPADDING=0 ALIGN=CENTER><TR><TD>Quote, originally posted by Alexander &raquo;</TD></TR><TR><TD CLASS="quote">Yup! Check my sig fella </TD></TR></TABLE>
and ill send you the vins!!!!! thanks and good luck with your quest as well.

I know what your saying, but say it was stolen, you didnt buy it knowing it was stolen, you bought it legitimately...if you run a carfax or a vin check and find out it is stolen, what will you do? Contact the rightful owner? If i was in that position i think i'd rather not know (even though that may be wrong, most people would probably think the same way)

well did the carfax say the car had salvage history from being stolen or what?

you can take the vin# to the police and say some guy was trying to sell you this motor and wanted to check it out, police are nice when they arent pulling you over

well as it turns out i found the information i needed....well i still don't know what number R my swap is from but i found out where it was originated (Alabama) and it was totaled in Florida where is was declared a "junk title"......and purchased at auction for parts.....put in an EK that a friend of mine bought....then sold the swap to me......so piece of mind is worth more than any dollar amount..would still like to know the specific R number just for my own satisfaction...so ill continue.....somehow.

whatever *** bag.....its my quest if you don't like it i don't care.....with all of the hype about stolen R engines and parts.....i want to be sure im no part of it.....so to each his own.....ill build my own Hype R......and who knows it may out perform the real thing....but i know it will always be just a hatch....but it is still a hobby either way and i like to "build" cars.....so really you can f**k off thanks.

thanks to Alexander for the help....
