Default Barely failed WI emissions, damn HCs

Well I passed on everything except the HCs which the limit is 0.8000 and I had 1.0005. What causes the HC to be higher and what can I do to lower this for a enuf time to pass and move on. I dont want to dump any money into this car if not needed.

Heres my set-up: D16z6, PM7 ecu obd0, mpfi, intake, custom catback and there is a little exhaust leak before the cat I think and I have no CELs.

I ignition timing might be off could that do anything to effect the HC count?

Please give me some ideas, I have to pass emissions becuase my tag is up at the end of the month

pm7 = zc ecu right?

try a pm6.

HC = unburnt fuel = you're runnin rich. probably cuz of the fuel maps of the ZC ecu.

I dont have a pm6 and dont really want to spend the $50 on an ecu...I have a pm8 that would lean it up quite a bit. Would I fail if its not getting enuf fuel or a way to make the gas burn better???

I have heard of people putting rubbing alcohol in their gas. Anyone ever heard this???

rubbing alcohol would basically give it a higher octane rating. so dont do that. it'll be worse.

the pm8 MIGHT be ok.. but u will get a cel (lack of EGR).. im not sure if they'll even check it w/ the pm8 installed.

i bought a spare pm6 for $15shipped.

look for an 88-89 ecu (usually cheaper)

Your ignition timing would throw off the HC's.

Can you post your other test results?

HC's and CO's usually go hand in hand, but if the CO's were pretty low then it changes the ball game.

What did you do as far as tune up goes before the test?
Chang out the plugs, wires, distributor cap... etc??!??

Do you have an adjustable fuel pressure regulator?

Heres the full test results:

HC-----------1.0005 LIMIT----0.8000>>>FAILED
CO-----------12.5252 LIMIT----15.0000>>>PASSED
NOx----------0.5902 LIMIT----2.0000>>>PASSED

My gas cap failed too LOL

I did nothing but I did look at the plugs and I knew my car was running rich becuase of the PM7 on the z6.

I think my ignition timing might be off beciase the original owner might have had a shot of nitrious, but I havent had time to get it checked. Pretty much the car is the same as when I bought it except for an obvious oil change.

Hydrocarbons can rise due to retarded ignition timing. Advance it to stock, or a litte more if you need to, and give it a shot. I've gotten my cars to pass, and they are very fucked up in the emissions dept.

We got my 85 Corolla from 1100 HC to 160 HC. Just takes some tweaking.

Well I advanced the ignition timing and I noticed that the dizzy is only held on by one bolt. Is that becuase its an obd0 dizzy on the z6? If I were to convert to obd1 would I have to get a obd1 dizzy?

Im going to run it thru this afternoon and hopefully I'll pass this time. Now that its advanced the car seems more responsive and, for lack of better words, its peppy. I like
