Racing on bent wheel
Hey all - A few months back i bought a used set of prelude SH wheels off of a member here. When I mounted the tires I noticed that the steering wheel was shaking badly above 60 mph. I though I just needed to hav them rebalanced. I did so today and the guy said that one wheel was bent pretty bad. Im planning to attend a Limerock HPDE with these wheels this monday and I was wondering if its okay if I mount that one bad wheel on the rear passanger's side (I figure since Limerock is mostly right turns thats the wheel that will be getting least traction. Let me know what you think. TIA
Peter
PS - regarding the member who I bought them from, he assured me that they were in good working order, just scuffed. Should I call him out on that or let it go since it was so long ago. Thanks again.

Ill test it out tonight -if its still shaking in the rear badly maybe I'll just use the 205-50-16 SO3s in the rear and have my 215-45-16 Azenis in the front

OK - the same can be said of driving 50 feet w/o a seat belt. Does any one here have a specific answer? I mean if I put it on and take it up to a high speed and don't feel any vibrations it should be safe to use it, right?

You should've seen the left front wheel Andy Hope drove on when he won/classed as 2nd at Mid-Ohio last August. I think it was just the lip that was bent and not the entire wheel.
How well does your tire hold air?

Even though you may assume the risk, is it fair to force others (your instructor, other people on the track) to assume your risk?
You have 4 days (Wed - Sat) to find a wheel. I would use the time wisely or just use the other set of wheels you said you had.

It really depends how bad it's bent.
If it comes close to balancing, isn't visibly bent, and holds air, I'd keep use it in the rear. Try to find a replacement and keep the bent one as a spare.
If it shakes badly, won't balance at all, or doesn't hold air, then find a new wheel.

You should be able to find someone locally to repair the wheel for around 50$. There's a guy around here who fixed one of my 15x7 wheels which became badly warped after an off/flat and which I really needed for en enduro. He showed me some of his work and it was amazing. He can even fix wheels with a chunk of them missing. As long as the spokes of the wheel do not have a crack that is visible both front and back, he can fix almost anything.
Worst case scenario I'll just use my stock wheels with the old SO3s - problem is that they are beginning to lack in tread. I'll call around to see if anyone I know has a spare SH wheel I can use or buy from them and lets home they can get this done by sunday evening.
BTW - It holds air fine. I couldn't even tell there was anything wrong until a few days after I put it on when I took the car past 60.

A bent wheel on the lightest corner may induce wheel hop under threshold braking. I've been there, it's no fun! This could easily create ***-in-front-of-faceitis. I would say a wrecked car is not worth the small $$ to replace the wheel.
Get used to throwing money away on crap like this. By the way, chances are you will now hit a curb and bend your brand new wheel. That's how this **** works.

Well I took it for a drive and if the guy @ Town Fair Tire hadn't told me it was bent I would not have known. I even took it to 110 for a brief moment and I didnt notice any shaking. But just to be on the safe side a buddy of mine said he has a wheel I could use for the event. Thanks for all your input everybody.
